Unwrapping an inscribed cone

I have an ancient object shaped like a cone, divided along its length into sections, each of which contains a line of writing. I've taken multiple photos of the object (take a snap, rotate a half line, take a snap, etc.) and I'd like to merge them together into an 'unwrapped' cone shape.

I can manage two photos quite nicely using the simple automated procedure, but after that it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions? Happy to provide photo samples if that would help....

(Tried with cropped photos of 'head on' lines with a bit on either side, to help the algorithm connect the pieces.)

On a Mac with El Capitan, using Hugin 2016.2.

1) Was not able to run the 'latest download', system immediately hangs upon first run.

2) Noted recommendation to another user with that problem to use 2016.2. I did that, it does run, and I attempted to follow the instructions for the 'scanned images' mosaic tutorial, but without success. Was not able to find the object successfully in Fast Preview for whatever reason.

3) Attempted to download 2014.1 referred to in the tutorial, but didn't find it. Downloaded 2014.0 instead. Not identical to what is shown in the tutorial, but I was able to stitch my cone together!

Updates to tutorials would be good to facilitate use of newer downloads, but of course I appreciate the time pressures involved :)
