psc1300 5012 error
I am running Ubuntu 9.10, i am a complete novice at this so please be patient:
I have an HP PSC 1300 all in one connected directly via usb, i have followed the steps in the Hplip help section.
USB
If you run "/usr/lib/
direct hp:/usb/
If you get instead, get output similiar to the following:
direct hp "Unknown" "HP Printer (HPLIP)"
Check all of the questions stated above.
Are you using any usb hubs? If so remove them and plug the printer directly into the system.
If you run lsusb -v, is the printer detected? If not, there may be a hardware or usb subsystem problem.
I have run the checks above i get "unknown hp printer" i have run lsusb and the printer is detected, the cables and printer are perfectly fine as it prints perfectly with my xp o/s laptop, please please please save me as if i cant get this fixed i will have to buy and install windows 7 and i dont ever want to run a windows system again after my experience with vista

Hi,
Please use hp-setup to configure the printer. The printer must be added using the hp:/ backend.
If you still face any issues, please run "hp-check -t" and post the complete output here.
Thanks,
~Adhir

I am sorry but i have no idea how to run setup using the hp:/ backend, what is it how do i get to it what do i do with it from there? i have tried to set up the printer manually using hplip and get the same problem.
After running hp check i get the following:
P Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.12)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3
Copyright (c) 2001-9 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).
Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Hi,
I am sorry I could not respond earlier. We have a release planned in the next couple of weeks, and that is keeping us quite busy here.
If you have added the printer using the command "hp-setup", it is using hp backend. I will be looking into the issue and will keep you posted.
Thank you for your patience, and apologies once again.
Regards,
~Adhir

No problem, new releases must come first, i have tried using the hp-setup, i followed the procedure from this site but with the same results i am sorry to say.
Thanks for taking the time to have a look at this for me, it is much appreciated, whenever you have time would be fine, at least there is help on the horizon i am just grateful for that.

It seems the log posted is not complete. Please re-run hp-check -t and post it in complete.
Suggestion:
(a) Is the user part of the lp group? Run "groups" in a terminal window and verify the user is a part of the lp group. If not, consult your Linux distro documentation on how to add the user to the lp group. In most distros you can run (as root): "usermod -g lp yourusername"
Thanks,
A

Thanks for posting the complete log. Can you also follow below steps. I want to check the permissions when you have connected the device.
(a) Re-connect your printer with the system via USB.
(b) Open a terminal , and run command
lsusb
(c) If your printer gets listed run below command to check the permissions:
ls -l /dev/bus/
(d) Post the same.
For e.g with a different printer model the output is as below:
$ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 03f0:3304 Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 990c
$ ls -l /dev/bus/
crw-rw-r-- 1 root lp 189, 130 2009-05-09 17:36 /dev/bus/
Thanks for the support to HPLIP!

From above data, it does seem correct with no issue.
Is the problems same with the root user. Below are the steps for you to check out the same:
(a) Remove the printer.
(b) Add the printer as root user. While adding the printer select the "Send Test Page to the printer" check-box
Does printing happen successfully?
Also , please share the messages\syslog content for a normal user. Steps are as below:
(a) Unplug the printer from your computer,
(b) Open a terminal window and run below command.
tail -f /var/log/messages
(c) connect the printer. Send a job to printer.
Post the complete log for the same. I want to see if there are any other problems being reported in the log.
Thanks for the support to HPLIP!

I can follow the second set of instructions, the output from which is below, sent a job to the printer message said print job sent, but it then just sat in processing and did nothing until the message came up saying it had printed when it hadn't even started

(iii) In your select device screen , you will see Connection Under description. Expand if its collapsed and select USB.
(iv) Click Forward
(v) Enter inforrmation in Describe Printer screen. Click Apply.
Send a job to print. is it printing with out any issue?
Thanks,

I have noticed when scanning through the cups drivers that they do not seem to support the PSC series all in one HP printers, is this going to be a problem or will that problem be solved by hplip? if that is a problem and it is just a case of changing my printer to one on the cups driver list then that i can do.
Any information on this matter would be very very much appreciated
Again many thanks to you for your time and efforts on my behalf

Thanks for the co-operation and sharing all logs! I could not yet figure out what has been going wrong. Here is another request if you can try out the same.
HP PSC 1300 All in one which has been supported from hplip 0.9.5 release onward. Its a very old printer model and only partially supported. Below links give more information on the same:
http://
On ubuntu 9.10 , you can find older version of hplip 3.9.2 pre-bundled in the software repository. Request you to install the same.
Steps as per below:
(0) Uninstall any pre-installed HPLIP versions.
(a) Launch Synaptic Package Manager.
Menu path as below:
(System --> Administration --> Synaptic Package Manager)
(b) Below packages should be selected and installed that can be found in Synaptic package manager.
hplip
hplip-data
hplip-gui
hpijs
hpijs-ppds
SynapticHowTo link below can be useful if you are un-aware of its usage.
https:/
After installing you can launch HP Device Manager to add your printer.Check whether the problem is still the same?
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Thanks!

I tried following your instruction as best as i could but i cannot remove hplip from my system as it no longer appears in the installed software in the ubuntu software centre.
I have gone into synaptic manager and reinstalled the components you listed in the hope that would be enough, however the situation remains the same.
Could you please give me instruction on how to remove hplip, also as i know my printer is very old could you tell me which HP all in one printer is fully supported by hplip and unbuntu 9.10, i am aware you cannot guarantee that it will work but if its the age of my hardware then i will update my hardware.
It must be an all in one, i have tried to look but its a complete mess with various web pages all giving different opinions
Many thanks for your time and continued support
