I have a problem using re-installing hplip for my Linux box after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by vlade5394

Previously, I was running Ubuntu 8.10 for my HP officejet 6500 and it was operating.

After an upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04, I could not use my HP software, so I tried reinstalling hplip and got the following error message

error: Configure failed with error: python-devel not found

What should I do?

Thank you

I assume you're manually installing from a package from the HPLIP website.

The OfficeJet 6500 should be supported by the HPLIP release that is included with Ubuntu 9.04, so perhaps you could try just reinstalling the hplip and hplip-data packages from the Ubuntu repositories, particularly if you previously used a manually installed version of HPLIP and it ceased to work when you upgraded Ubuntu.

You can reinstall the Ubuntu packages with the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall hplip hplip-data

If need to or want to install from a package from the HPLIP site and need Python development libraries in order to install, try installing the python-all-dev package from the Ubuntu repositories. I can't say with confidence that's the exact package you're missing but it's a decent first guess.

Thank you for your assistance, but I have a further issue.

I can now print with my HP 6500, however, the scanning function using xsane is not working. I removed and reinstalled xsane and get the same error message when I run xsane - "no device available".

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dave,

Can you send me the output of "hp-check -t" also can you confirm if running xsane from terminal using sudo works or not.

You can run xsane from terminal by running "sudo xsane"

Thanks
