HP Scanning Xsane Failed to open device

Asked by exup1000

Hi
I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and a HP Officejet All in one 6210. Printing was fine but scanning is popping up an error as shown.

"Failed to open device 'hpaio:/usb/Officejet_6200_serie?serial=CN......... Error during device I/O"

I have run hp-check -t and I get one error around cups and also a note under scanning -L

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied
tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully
compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb,
.rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to
successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the
above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

===================================END

Other things I have tried are;

Deleting printers and re-running sudo hp-setup
Tried to install the cups drivers but they are installed already but hp-check does not seem to determine this.
Unistalled Xsane, deleted the /.sane folder and then installed Xsane

I have uninstalled deleted the .sane folder and reinstalled it. No change.
I have also installed strace and monitored the output in a grep file i see alot of permission denied messages. See below.

I have also run sudo hp-plugin

Cheers for your help.

Looks like a permission issue. Can you try running xsane as root (sudo xsane), and see if you are able to scan.

Hi,

tried that before and just repeated the test again, but get the message "warning do not run as root, you are on your own." I click continue and get same error message "Failed to open device 'hpaio:/usb/Officejet_6200_serie?serial=CN......... Error during device I/O"

There is also another pop up box, hplip device status, officejet_6200_series Printer scan job failed (2002)

Cheers.
