new printer compatability

Asked by don bishop

I have just bought an HP Deskjet F2480 printer and see from your literature that only windows and Mac systems are supported.
My operating system is Linux Ubuntu 9.10 . My hplip version is 3.9.8- lubuntu2.
Can I proceed with the installation or should I return the printer to my supplier?

Yes, it is supported. The version you have on Ubuntu is new enough to support this model so no need to download a newer version.

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/deskjet_aio/deskjet_f2400_series.html

Connect the printer to your computer by USB cable and run 'hp-setup' at the command line to set it up.

Andrew,
The printers supported are:- f2100, f2200, f4100
f2480 is not included nor is the f2400 series
Your website " http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/deskjet_aio/deskjet_f2400_series.html" cannot be found

The link opens OK for me but try this shortcut:

http://tinyurl.com/y9nn9sl

Or you may go to the HPLIP home page at http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html and click on 'Supported Printers' at the lower left. Again, although you will see a big green button to Download the software, no need for this in your case as the version you already have in Ubuntu is new enough.

Andrew, I have selected "http://tinyurl.com/y9nn9sl" and established f2480 is supported.
I then ran hp-setup which sent me to "device discovery", selected USB then
"Select from discovered devices"
Reported "no devices found"
What's going wrong?
Thanks for your perseverancel

Hi Don,

Please make sure that the printer is turned on and connected to your computer by USB cable. If it was, turn the printer off and on again and/or try another cable.

If you're still not getting anywhere, run 'hp-check -r' at the command line and post the results here.

Hi again Don,

Open your Ubuntu printers list and delete the entry for this printer as it is invalid.

It appears the USB cable may have been connected before but is not now so please double check the connection. To confirm that your computer can see the printer, run 'lsusb' from the command line and look for the name of the printer in its output.

Once the printer is showing as connected, run 'hp-setup' from the command line to add it back to your printer list.

I have deleted the printer list and re-run 'hp-set-up'
The printer configuration - local host shows printer 'HP-Deskjet-f2400 series' with a green tick
When I Try to print, the printer f2400 series is identified but when i press the OK button I get no output
a new 'lsusb' run includes the statement:-
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 03f0:7611 Hewlett-Packard
We seem to be getting there slowly!

Don,

I have just accessed an installation of Ubuntu 9.10 and found that the file /usr/share/hplip/data/models/models.dat which shows which models are supported does not show yours. Since this version of HPLIP is supposed to support yours this is a bug and I'll file a bug report.

To help people here (or me anyway) spot this kind of this better in the future, please post the whole output of 'hp-check -r'. I especially want to know what "DISCOVERED USB DEVICES" shows.

I checked the latest version of HPLIP and your printer name is in the above file so that new version should work fine. You may follow the instructions on how to do that here:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

If that does work, please click on the button here to mark this question as "Solved"

Bye for now
