office pro 8500

Asked by ager2

After a period of time printer shuts down. On/off button flashes but will not restart. Must unplug and plug back in to get small screen display back. Printer works fine until it sits idle for a period of time. Then have to unplug and plug back in to get it to work again.

Try unplugging both ends of the power cable and the USB and phone cables if used. Wait 1 minute, and plug the power only into a wall jack (not a power strip) on a different electrical circuit if possible. Wait for as long as it took before to turn off. You may test it by making a copy or a Status Report from Print Report under the Setup menu.

If the problem continues, you'll have to call HP phone support for a replacement power supply and/or printer. Good thing the printer should still be in warranty as this model has been out less than a year. HP does not have phone support for Linux so when prompted by the phone system, indicate you have a Mac (If you're in Canada or US M-F 8am-12pm EST, Saturday 11-6). When you reach an agent say this happens 'standalone' (i.e even with no computer connection) and hopefully they will help you.

Thank You for your responce. I followed your instructions in taking the power strip out of the circuit so time will tell if it happens again. I do notice that the on/off button is no longer flashing but is on steady now. That should be a good sign.
I have had problems with plug strips on other equipment in the past. Should no better than to use the older type strips. Maybe the newer ones are just as bad?
If I have to call HP or contact Linux you indicated telling them I have a Mac. I do not have a Mac so is using the name Mac have a special meaning to the problem?
Thanks again. Will respond in a few days to let you know what is happening.

Occasionally power strips will provide insufficient power to the printer. Hard to say whether newer ones are better - you just have to check to see if it makes a difference.

I said contact HP because they can replace the printer or power supply under warranty. Sorry I was unclear. If you have a Windows computer as well as your Linux computer, say you have Windows. If you have a Mac computer as well as your Linux computer, say you have Mac. This is because they may want a computer connection to do some testing. If you have just Linux, I'm not sure what you should say as Linux is not officially supported by the telephone support lines. They may insist you have a Windows or Mac computer even though this problem is unlikely to have anything to do with the computer. You'd have to call and see what they say.

I made contact with HP and after 3 sessions with them they could not correct the problem over the phone. They are replacing the printer. Thank You for your help.
