As far as I see we (i.e. Novell/Suse) do not provide
HPLIP for Suse Linux Enterprise Server 9.

Therefore I suggest not to use printers which require
a particular special driver like HPLIP but use printers
which support a traditional well known printer language
like PCL5e or preferably PostScript (the latter in particular
for color printers).

In
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/index.html
in the details for each model look for printers which belong to the
APDK device class(es) LJMono and/or Postscript
and do not try to use printers which require a driver plug-in
or which require firmware download.

See in general
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Purchasing_a_Printer_and_Compatibility
and in particular for more details
http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Information_for_Printer_Manufacturers_Regarding_Linux_Support

In particular in a business environment using a proper printer
will solve the driver problem once and for all, as it will eliminate
the need for installing and configuring (possibly proprietary)
driver software and obtaining driver updates required
for new developments in the print system e.g. after you
may have upgraded from Suse Linux Enterprise Server 9
to Suse Linux Enterprise Server 11.
