d1660 not printing grayscale, unable to use black cartridge, ubuntu 9.10

Asked by b.

I just bought an HP deskjet d1660 inkjet printer; after installing it using the HPlip-version 3.9.8., which comes with ubuntu 9.10, the printer wouldn't print in grayscale mode - and everything that should be black is printed somewhat brown (and really bad quality); I installed the latest HPlip version (3.9.10), but the printer wouldn't work at all. now I'm back to version 3.9.8., but the problem remains: the printer doesn't use the black cartridge.

the outcome of the "dpkg -l hplip" command is:

Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold

here comes the output of the "hp-check"-command:

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

update: as you can see, the "dpkg"-command states:

ii hplip 3.9.8-1ubuntu2 HP Linux Printing and Imaging System (HPLIP)

while the hp-check command says:

Currently installed HPLIP version...
HPLIP 3.9.10 currently installed in '/usr/share/hplip'.

- I figured that I'd better completely remove HPLIP, and then re-installed the 3.9.10-version from the hp-website. the outcome of the "dpkg -l hplip"-command goes like this now:

Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold

|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name Version Description
+++-==============-==============-============================================
un hplip <none> (no description available)

- the output of the "hp-check" command is:

I uninstalled the printer from the HPLIP-toolbox; it then suggested three possibilities to re-install, one of them is via CUPS - try www.cups.org, go to ADMINISTRATION, ADD PRINTER; I chose my printer and then the option that says "HP CUPS 3.9.8" (or something like that) - and it works!

Hi,

From the information above, again HPLIP version is not matching in hp-check and dkpg output. And, you are still seeing HPLIP version to be 3.9.8 when you used cups interface. Looks like some files are not updated properly with the 3.9.10 installation.

Does it work, if you re-install the printer using hp-toolbox?\

Suma

I'm getting the same problem with the D2660 with Ubuntu 9.10.

I've just found this thread, but I'm not clear what I should try next.

Should I roll back to 3.9.8? Should I re-install using the hp-toolbox (which I don't know how to get to) ?

I just want to be a plug-n-play user ideally. Was very impressed that Ubuntu 9.10 recognised the printer automatically as soon as i plugged in the USB, but unfortunately there is this problem with the black cartridge.

Hi all I have the same grayscale problem with my HP D1660 printer. I installed HPLIP 3.9.10 but my terminal still shows that 3.9.8 is there. Curious I never had any of these problems with my previous D1560 printer (I didn't even have to install HPLIP)

Printing in colour all the time is expensive on ink and the black is not as black. Is rolling back ubuntu to 9.04 an option? help anyone?

hi everybody,

I got the black cartridge working using CUPS; I'm far from being a pro, so I can only try to approximately tell you what I did do fix this - there's surely some unnecessary steps in here, but anyways...

I first removed HPLIP completely:

su -c "rm -rf /usr/share/hplip"

sudo rm -rf /usr/share/hplip

then I reinstalled:

sh hplip-3.9.10.run

after that, I installed the cups (before the complete removal, that didn't work - now it did):

sudo aptitude install --assume-yes cupsddk cupsddk-drivers

I did a "hp-check", then "hp-plugin" and finally "hp-setup"; when the setup is running, I decided to use CUPS - when you configur the printer via CUPS, things seem to work.

hope it works for you as well, cheers

There is a fix (workaround) to a similar problem, i'm not sure it works here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/487782/comments/11

Can you help with this problem?
