reset expired ink works with windows, not with hplip

Asked by menner

My Photosmart D6160 flashes the ink symbol and doesn't print with Linux.
Plugging the USB cable to a Windows computer, the printer driver shows a dialog box saying something like "printing with expired ink, ... own risk ..." etc. I can agree to that. And after that, voila, the ink symbol is dark and I can print.
And then, plugging the cable back to the Linux box, I can print here also! Fine.
But, after a printer power cycle, the story starts again.

How can I reset the ink failure whithout the need for a Windows box.

(using Ubuntu 8.04.02 LTS, with the latest hplip 3.9.10. Windows is XP)

menner: This feature is not available in HPLIP. Sorry for the inconvenience.
We are looking at implementing this at some point in the future. Although I can't give you a specific ETA or release. It is on our list of items to look in to.

Thanks for your support of HPLIP--we appreciate it.

Since I'm not using windows, I was forced to change a (half full , large black) ink cartridge. It is a (major, since these are almost as expensive as a new printer - give or take a few) cost saving feature. My point being: please postpone, just not for too long ;-)

But in the meantime I'm looking at 'hardwarestore dot X' for an alternative printer, that is not so tightly bound into M$. Any suggestions are welcome.

(using Suse 11.2 and an HP Photo'smart' (...) D6160)

Mubeen, thank you for your answer. So there's some hope for me (and others).

I bought this printer, since HP was said to provide the best linux drivers for their printers, and because they are open source. (well, it wasn't the only reason). But for the near future these good drivers are almost useless, unless I have a Windows box around. I've got a monchrome laser printer as well, and I rarely print photos or coloured pages. But when I need to, without windows, I'm supposed to throw away my almost full ink cartriges. Well, I'll be waiting patiently.
