HP printer only shows up in OpenOffice

Asked by Rick Horowitz

HP OfficeJet J4680, nearly new installation of Ubuntu 9.04 with several additional applications installed. System is fully up-to-date with security updates. hpijs and hplib 3.9.2-3ubuntu4 are installed.

I configured the printer to connect via WIFI. The printer configuration seems to work -- I can print a test page. I can also print from OpenOffice 3.0. However, when I attempt to print from any other application, the print window shows no printers, not even a "Print to File" option.

I have 3 other Ubuntu 9.04 machines, all of which appear to be working normally with this printer (via WIFI). These machines are also fully updated with security updates, however, they do not have identical applications installed.

I ran hp-check -t on this and one of the working machines and found very few differences. Here is the hp-check output from the broken machine, followed by the diff, and then followed by the hp-check output from the working machine.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to
successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies
installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Primary difference seen the broken machine is 64 bit Linux OS, whereas the working machine is 32 Bit OS.

How did you install hplip. Configure settings are different for 32 bit and 64 bit OS. Check out the below link for configure settings:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/ubuntu.html

Hope, this solves your issue.

Thanks,
