On Networked printer, can print but not scan.

Asked by ghostdog

I have kubuntu 9.04 on my laptop/desktop, connected to a "Photosmart Premium C309g" thru a linksys router. I can print but I can not access the scanner. Attached is the "hp-check.log"

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP
supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed to
successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package
(.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies
installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both
of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Can you please share the syslog file after performing scan operations. Below is the command that could be helpful.

tail -f /var/log/syslog

Thanks,

A

scanimage -L should detect your printer. From the log , we do not see the device being detected.

By default , hpaio line entry should be there in the file /etc/sane.d/dll.conf. Can you please confirm the same?

Yes, the hpaio line is there.

# /etc/sane.d/dll.conf - Configuration file for the SANE dynamic backend loader
#
# On Debian systems, the dll backend will also look for pieces of configuration
# in the /etc/sane.d/dll.d directory -- packages providing backends should drop
# a config file similar to dll.conf in this directory.
#
# enable the next line if you want to allow access through the network:
net
hpaio
abaton
....

HPLIP does not support third party network sharing devices. We do not test with linksys router so could not say with that configuration it will work correctly or not.

Does it work when the printer is connected via USB? If it works, than we are unable to assist you any further.

Sorry for the inconvenience!

Thanks,

A

1. What third party network sharing devices are you speaking about?
2. If you do not test with Linksys routers, why do you sell them on your website?

This is the same router I am using.

3. When I connected a usb cable and re-ran: sh hplip-3.9.8.run. hp-setup does not see the printer. In order to print, I tell CUPS, the device is "AppSocket/HP JetDirect" and the URI is "socket://x.x.x.x" (it's IP address)

I've just confirmed from the support site , the printer model Photosmart Premium c309g has yet not been supported. That's the reason it was not detected via USB.

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/combined.html

This printer model should be supported with some future versions of hplip. However , I can not give you any time-frame for the same.

Thanks,

A

Yes, that much I have figured out. Cups supports the "HP Photosmart c309a", if not the c309g what lesser version does hplip support? Maybe the c309a or the c209?
