HPLIP Toolbox does not find my printer/scanner

Asked by tikitin

My linux distro: Ubuntu 8.04
My printer : HP Photosmart C4480
HPLIP Toolbox says: "ERROR: No device found or unsupported device". On the left panel of the HP Device manager there is a picture of a printer and a text "HP Photosmart c4400 series", but there is also a red cross on the top of the picture, obviously indicating that there is something wrong with the device.
XSane can't find my scanner, so scanning does not work.

I have been able to use use the printer, though. CUPS finds my printer. But after I replaced the cartridges in my printer, they have been misaligned, and I'd need the HPLIP Toolbox to re-align them.

In the output of "hp-check -t" there is a line: "Checking for CUPS...Status: ajastin on käynnissä"
The Finnish words mean: "The timer is on".

In the end of the output it says: "error: 2 errors and/or warnings".
One of the errors obviously is : "'hpaio' in '/etc/sane.d/dll.conf'...
error: Not found. SANE backend 'hpaio' NOT properly setup (needs to be added to /etc/sane.d/dll.conf)."
But what should I do about this "hpaio"?

The other error is : "Checking SIP version...
error: SIP not installed or version not found."
What should I do about this?

The output of "hp-check -t" is as follows:

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

The errors:

--------------------------
| DISCOVERED USB DEVICES |
--------------------------

No devices found.

---------------------------------
| INSTALLED CUPS PRINTER QUEUES |
---------------------------------

warning: No queues found.

Indicate that the printer isn't being detected by HPLIP and there are no printer queues configured. Try turning the printer off and then back on and disconnecting/reconnecting the printer and then run:

/usr/lib/cups/backend/hp

and post the output.

As for the error:

error: Not found. SANE backend 'hpaio' NOT properly setup (needs to be added to /etc/sane.d/dll.conf)."

Edit the file /etc/sane.d/dll.conf at the bottom add hpaio, then save the file and exit the editor you are using. Example:

sudo gedit /etc/sane.d/dll.conf

Adding "hpaio" to /etc/sane.d/dll.conf did work because
"hp-check -t" only produces one error.

Output of " /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp" is as folllows:
direct hp "Unknown" "HP Printer (HPLIP)"

The HP Photosmart C4400 series printer is supported by HPLIP 2.8.5 and greater. You currently have HPLIP 2.8.2 installed so the installed version of HPLIP will not work with this device. Please upgrade to the latest version of HPLIP.

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/photosmart/photosmart_c4400_series.html

Thanks for your support of HPLIP--we appreciate it.

This nearly solved my problem. I upgraded HPLIP and now scanning works, HPLIP Toolbox opens up, I am able to align the cartridges. The funny thing is, that the only one thing that used to work before, doesn't work any more: printing!
Printing a page from any application or the test page doesn't produce any result.
I get messages like "Started a print job" and "the print job has completed", but the printer does not respond at all.
On the CUPS administration page I found a line "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed".

I wonder if this has something to do with the failure:" Printer Driver: HP PhotoSmart C4380 Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.2"
C4380 was the closest one I could find on the list, at the time I first installed the printer. And it did work, in terms of printing. At least it used to work.

In the device manager/device information/Photosmart_C4400_series, key number 7 "lpoptions_file_data" has the value "([Errno 2] No directory or file '/home/olli/.cups/lpoptions')"
(here "olli" is the username!)

I tried rebooting the computer, but it did not help.
"hp-check -t" tells now everything is okay, but I give the output here anyway.

Hi tikitin -

It looks like the queue you're trying to print to is still using the old ppd.

Device URI: hp:/usb/Photosmart_C4400_series?serial=TH859D158K0557
PPD: /etc/cups/ppd/Photosmart_C4400_series.ppd
PPD Description: HP PhotoSmart C4380 Foomatic/hpijs, hpijs 2.8.2

You're going to need to install a new queue and use the 3.9.8 ppd. Hp-setup should take care of this for you.

Thank you for supporting HPLIP.
