Installing HPLIP 3.9.8..trouble at the "make" step

Asked by Michael McKinney

Running RedHat 9 on a Dell Workstation and trying to install HPLIP. I am at the "make" step as a user not su. The scrip runs seemingly correctly until the very end, where "prnt/cupsext/cupsext.c" is reporting problems in 'getGroupList'. There follow 5 lines in which "structure as no member named 'name'" is stated. Then there is a line ".deps/cupsext_la-cupsext.Tpo: Permission denied" followed by "make: *** [cupsext_la-cupsext.lo] Error 1".

I am a novice at Linux but this seems to be a problem with user identification somewhere in my system (??).

We no longer test on Red Hat 9, although it could be you are missing the cups development packages.

If you are a novice, have you tried the latest versions of Fedora, Suse or Ubuntu? As a personal recommendation I'd suggest a novice starting with one of the later versions of these distros. Red Hat 9 is -very- old.
