OfficeJet 710 no longer found with hplip 3.9.8

Asked by Chris Rankin

We have an old OfficeJet 710, connected to the parallel port of a Fedora 11 machine, that has recently stopped being recognised by the hplip package:

$ hp-probe --bus=par

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.8)

warning: No devices found on the 'par' bus. If this isn't the result you are expecting,
warning: check to make sure your devices are properly connected and powered on.

Done.

Similarly for hp-makeuri:

$ hp-makeuri /dev/parport0

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.8)
Device URI Creation Utility ver. 5.0

Copyright (c) 2001-9 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.

error: Device not found

Also:

$ /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp
direct hp "Unknown" "HP Printer (HPLIP)"

The printer is still attached because I can get limited functionality by using /dev/lp0. However, there has obviously been a regression here. Can anyone suggest any way to discover what has gone wrong, please? I saw mention of a hp-check script, but Fedora 11 doesn't seem to include it.

The hplip GUI tool crashes on start-up, so that's no help.

I have finally found hp-check; it was masquerading as /usr/share/hplip/check.py. And unfortunately, it CRASHED while it was about half-way through. Here is all it wrote:

I have temporarily reset the device URI to hp:/par/OfficeJet_Series_700?device=/dev/parport0 and am now seeing the following in the dmesg output whenever I try to print anything:

hpcups[3569]: segfault at 0 ip (null) sp bf8d79dc error 4 in hpcups[8048000+61000]

HPLIP was installed without parallel support:

pp-build=no

I've just updated this document for parallel support:

http://hplipopensource.com/node/217

Which will help walk you through enabling parallel support. Let me know if you have any issues/questions so I can improve the documentation.

Thanks!

Aaron

Yes, rebuilding the RPM with parallel port support enabled has done the trick. Thanks :-). I have also raised a bug with Fedora so that hopefully no-one else will get bitten by this.

Has the default value of --enable-pp-build in HPLIP's configure script changed recently from "yes" to "no"?

Thanks Aaron Albright, that solved my question.
