Hi Aaron, as stated earlier, network and printer work fine. Duplexer does NOT work. It does work under Win XP. No longer using XP, but kept a partition until I learn a bit more about Ubuntu. The comm error I mentioned was on the prior attempt at issuing the command you suggested. The output I posted was after this I D 10 T turned the printer on. Sorry for misleading you. Any further info I can furnish? Again, my thanks.

A few things to check if duplex isn't working.
Run hp-toolbox, click on the printer, click print settings and be sure that the papersize selected is A4 (or) Letter Autoduplex.
In the duplex section make sure that duplex is enabled and select the long-edge, etc.
The duplex "on" setting may be under a section called Options or Misc.
Then duplex printing should work. Although from whatever application you are printing from be sure that the papersize is Letter Autoduplex (or A4, etc).
From the information above I'm seeing "duplexer 1" which means that HPLIP does detect that the printer has a duplexor. It's just a matter of getting the queue configured so that it will indeed print duplex.
Hope this helps.

Hi Aaron, Thanks for trying. I'd been through all those setting before I came to this site, but I rechecked them again to be sure. After all, they are pretty much the same as the setting on the Win XP side of things, where the duplexer works just fine. Since it does work under XP, I have to believe there is a bug in this version of HPLIP. I'm wondering if an earlier version of it would work, but I don't see any options to download an earlier version. Maybe I'll check Synaptic and see if there's an earlier version there. But again, I thank you for your efforts. I did learn a bit from your help. Take care.

Hi Aaron, after checking sourceforge I found earlier drivers, but nothing appears to be helpful in this regard. I did notice that while the HP printing site offered hplip-3.9.8, and that in fact is what I downloaded and installed, Synaptic insists that what I have loaded is 3.9.2. I'm not sure if this would be of interest to the package managers or not, but I thought that I would at least make mention of it. Just hoping to provide some information, perhaps useful, perhaps not. Thanks again.

Try removing HPLIP and reinstalling.
To remove HPLIP:
http://
Also do before hand:
sudo apt-get remove hplip
Then re-install. Any better luck?
The versions between the Ubuntu repos and installing any other software manually will not mix and Synaptic wont "see" the manually installed software so the versions and install validation will be off.

Hi Aaron, I followed your instructions to the letter. First yours, and then the instructions on the web page, and verified that all worked "as ordered". Then did a clean install. Unfortunately, the results are exactly the same as before. And after the install completed, I did a reboot, just to be certain.
Not that I believe it will help, but here's a few other items I noticed:
In Printer settings, although duplexer is marked installed, it is greyed out on the page.
When printing an .odt file from Open Office, in the printer setup fields, I note that the only
option under "duplexer" is either OFF or ignore. Yet on the next tab, it shows "installed".
and I did try both choices, but it made no difference.
This printer has badly disappointed me overall. I had to trash a very good printer because it did not support Linux and which is why I bought this one. I spent three days trying to get it set up on wireless, before I gave up, and that was one of the reasons (because of space constraints) that I bought it. It does work fine when cabled to my router, so I had to settle for that. But on this matter at hand, since it works well on Win XP, I can't really fault the printer. At this point, color me frustrated.
But aside from all that, I do thank you for all your help. I've learned a great deal about Ubuntu along the way. (While I'm a newbie here, and haven't used *nix in over 30 years since I was working for Cyrix, and was never involved in sys admin, it's been a real learning experience.) So again, many thanks. - - Don

Hi Aaron, Well, I found that by following the instructions on the web page, that it did not really uninstall it. My fault, because the instructions assumed it was in the home folder, whereas, I had installed it in the /home/Documents folder. So again, I uninstalled it, this time removing it from where it really resided. Verified that all of those folders were really gone. Then went to Administration-
After the install, found that when I tried to go to printer settings, there were still listed 4 icons, and that the previous duplexer settings were still being held somewhere. So I think it's obvious that despite all my efforts at removing everything, those printer icons and settings were still being held SOMEWHERE! Nonetheless, the new install still gave the same results. Duplexing does not work. At this point, I have nowhere else to go, so I guess I'll just give it up as a bad job. Again, thanks very much for all the help. I really do appreciate all of your (no doubt frustrating) efforts. - - Don

If you go to http://
Click printers, then for the printer click set printer options, is there a section "Options Installed" and is the duplexor enabled?
I've tested the J6400 series and was able to duplex.
On the CUPS admin page the J6400 was set like this:
http://
and in OpenOffice I had to set it like this:
http://
For some reason OpenOffice instead detecting the duplex correctly--and I set it to ignore. I did duplex, however.
Hope this helps!

Hi Aaron, Well, no happiness, but something interesting. Prior to following your instructions, I made sure that it was set to Letter Autoduplex, and that the duplexer was installed. I then went to the Localhost:631 and found that it said that the duplexer was NOT installed and that it was NOT enabled, even though the local setting insisted that they were. So I followed the screen instructions to set it to installed and enabled. Then I tried again, after setting the OPenOffice duplexer to ignore. But still it doesn't duplex. If it didnt work with XP, I'd swear it was the printer, but that sort of rules that out. Over the last couple of days I've been trying different combinations of settings, trying to find out if there is some combination that could cause this to happen, but no luck there either. I also noticed that there were two recommended drivers for this printer, with the only difference between them being that one was "Pbotosmart" and the installed one was not. So I installed the Photosmart driver just to see if it would make any difference, but no luck there either. (Under XP it is labelled as a "Photosmart" printer) Again, color me baffled. - - Don

Hi Aaron, OK, here's the story to date. My last post was correct, and did not help, so I tried the "modify printer" option, noticed that it was set for "jetdirect", and instead selected the option which named the printer and the local ip address of the printer. I exited and tried to print again. This time it printed the first side of the document, pulled it back into the duplexer, waited 8 minutes, and then spit the paper out with the second side totally blank, and there it hung forever. I then discovered that the Accessories-

Hi again Aaron, Well, Your original suggestions worked best, but . . . . . This is repeatable after 4 reinstalls, I find that following your original suggestion gives the following results. Sending a 2 page file to the printer prints the first page, pulls it back into the duplexer, where it sits for 3 or 4 minutes, then says Print cancelled on the front panel of the printer, and then hangs at that point for another couple of minutes, then spits out the paper with the second side blank, and hangs up there saying busy ad infinitum. Meanwhile the jobs queue say processing, again ad infinitum. - - Don

Hi Aaron, Well, I hadn't tried it from Win XP since I installed it, so I figured I'd better go back to Win XP and try again, just to be sure nothing has changed. It hasn't. It works just fine under Windows, and I also noticed that it doesn't have those long delays between operations that is does under Ubuntu. To be honest, by now, if you haven't decided that I'm a total nut job, I'd be greatly surprised. But I assure you, I'm just as frustrated as you must be by now. Don't know how you've put up with me this long! :-)
As an aside, in my own research, I came across and article on the HP Linux web site which tells me that wireless doesn't work on this model! They say that you have to do the install twice to get it to work properly! Wonderful, wish I had found that site sooner.
The only other thing I can think of is that somehow the wrong driver is being installed. Can you confirm the driver and ppd file you are using to make it work? Nothing else occurs to me. And again, many thanks for all your efforts on my behalf. - - Don

Hi Aaron, I have my answer. I guess it is good news for me, and bad news for hplip-3.9.8. The good news is that I am now working and duplexing with the version of hplip shippled with the jaunty release CD, and updated with the current updates. Here is the bad news. First, I totally reformatted my drive, and did a new install of 9.04. I then did the updates. Next I installed hplip-3.9.8. The results were as described in all the previous posts; no duplexing. (I was afraid that I had made some change prior to the install of the latest hplip that was affecting it's operation, and I wanted to rule out that possibility) This says that there is a problem with 3.9.8. No question. So, again, I reformatted the partitions, did a fresh install of jaunty, and downloaded the latest updates, and used hp-setup to use the version of hplip that was shipped with jaunty. While it is not as "elegant" as the latest version, it does work, and the duplexing comes up properly, and Open Office properties even offers the option of duplexing "long edge standard". So my problem is solved, however I'm pretty sure that 3.9.8 has an inherent problem and probably should be reported as a bug. Once again, I thank you so very much for all your efforts. It is greatly appreciated. If I can offer any further information, please let me know. I'm just very sorry that I didn't try the shipped version of hplip first, instead of going for the latest version. Guess that was a pretty dumb decision. Live and learn, I guess. I just wonder why I've done so much living, and so little learning? Again, many thanks!

Hi Aaron, Hoping this info will help a bit. I've hplip 3.9.2, 3.9.4 and 3.9.6. The 3.9.4 works just fine, and the problem occurs when I switched to version 3.9.6. So I'm now a happy camper. If I can furnish any more info, please let me know, and again, thanks for all your efforts. - - Don

Hi Aaron, Just noticed that there was a 3.9.4b version, and that one also work properly. So the fault is somewhere between 3.9.4b and 3.9.6, Thanks again.
