hp 7960 doesnt work on Debian 5.01

Asked by ced

I removed all prepackaged hplip software using the Debian package manager and downloaded and installed hplip3.9.8. I have tried several reinstallations, until I was able to get to the end (running the automatic installation script).

As root user, 'hp-check -c' and 'hp-check -r' both give no errors or warnings.

When I run 'hp-check -r' as a regular user, I get:

error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/usb/photosmart_7900_series?serial=CN3CG311WHN8
error: Device not found
error: Communication status: Failed

Either way, I am unable to print. The printer works on Windows. When I try to print something, the printer just hangs and the printer queue shows the document in the queue with status 'Stopped'.

I am also not able to run the hp-toolbox (irregardless of user), I get:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/hp-toolbox", line 246, in <module>
    from ui4.devmgr5 import DevMgr5
ImportError: No module named ui4.devmgr5

Thanks,
ced

Aaron,

I get different results depending on whether I run "hp-check -t" as root or as a regular user. When I run as a regular user (ced), I get:

ced@galan:~$ hp-check -t

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

You do not want to run hp-check as root because the information wont be vaild for your user.

It does look like there is a permissions problem.

Edit the file:

/etc/udev/rules.d/55-hpmud.rules

and change the 664 to 666. Save the file, disconnect and reconnect the printer.

Hope this helps.

Try adding your user to the lp group.

Also it looks like you are getting an error about foomatic-rip-hplip failed.

You may need to reinstall to fix that error. Regardless the permissions issue is unrelated to the foomatic-rip-hplip failing.

I uninstalled by going into the directory hplip-3.9.8 and typing "make clean" as root. Then I reinstalled manually following directions in http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/debian.html

Everything works now. The problem appears to have been with the automatic installation script I had used earlier. Thanks for your help.
