I can't fax any file which has a non-english name

Asked by Raz Ziv

Hi,

When tring to fax a file which has a non-english character in its name, the file goes through the printing queue alright but never shows up in the "select files to send" list.
The "HP device manager" window remains responsive, but the cursor is of the "busy" shape.
When trying to fax through terminal in debug mode ("hp-sendfax -ldebug <file-name>") the last message displayed is:
"hp-sendfax[7055]: debug: Locking: /home/me/.hplip/hp-sendfax-Officejet_J6400_fax.lock"
compared to these lines which appear when sending an english-named file:
"hp-sendfax[7070]: debug: Locking: /home/me/.hplip/hp-sendfax-Officejet_J6400_fax.lock
hp-sendfax[7070]: debug: A new fax has arrived: /tmp/hpfax-tdWLNI (80)
hp-sendfax[7070]: debug: Magic=hplip_g3 Ver=1 Pages=1 hDPI=200 vDPI=200 Size=2 Res=2 Enc=2
hp-sendfax[7070]: debug: Adding file /tmp/hpfax-tdWLNI (application/hplip-fax,HPLIP Fax,a.pdf,1)" (and the fax may then be sent ok. yey!)

The problem is easily worked-around by simply renaming the file to english-only characters.
Is there some installation step that I missed, or is this a real bug?

I am running ubuntu Jaunty,
my printer is Officejet j6413
and the HPLIP version is 3.9.2

Thanks for the help,
and thanks for HPLIP!

Raz

Raz,

What's the filename you are trying to fax that isn't working?

Please please run hp-check -t and post the output.

Thanks!

Aaron

Hi Aaron,

The file that won't be faxed is named "הי.txt". Also "hi הי.txt" won't be faxed. However, "hi.txt" will. They are all text files with the same content.

The ouput of "hp-check -t" is quoted below:
-------------------------begin quote----------------------------
me@me-laptop:~$ hp-check -t

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.2)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.1

This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it
under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Initializing. Please wait...

Raz,

We can reproduce this. I'm adding this to our possible features to add. Although I can't give you any ETA on when/if this will be fixed.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks Aaron Albright, that solved my question.
