Frank,

In the directory with the HPLIP download run:

Thanks!

Frank,

I'm having the same problem as Andy. I'm trying to make a HP LaserJet 1020 work with my laptop. Background, I inherited my laptop from my college age daughter--who is unfortunately on the other coast now. I am a nube at the technical stuff, but love Ubuntu as a user. I have downloaded the 3.9.8.run program on my desktop, and also am getting the "can't run" response. I know you solved Andy's problem which sounds just like mine, but I don't understand your instructions to ...

right click on desktop program-properties then permission -- I can't seem to find this. Where do I do this?

on bottom[check off executable- terminal put in cd Desktop.enter.then this-
./hplip 3.9.8.run -- Again, where do I find this?

Thanks so much.

Regards,
Janice

On your desktop is the downloaded file,I would assume -please go to it and
right click on it then in the bottom of the new window click on the
permission tab look at that window and you will read executable file---check
it off and return to the terminal.Type cd Desktop in -the terminal then
enter-put in your password -enter [this moves the run program into the
terminal]- now put in the command ./hplip-3.9.8.run
enter---read what it says and use the automated install by entering
y leave your printer on and when the program has installed
restart your p/c-------------------------- when installed you will see
an HP emblem in the notification area.............frank

Hi Frank,

I've been trying to figure this out for quite some time now and just ran across this thread. Thanks so much! It seemed to work to a point. First, I attempted to type in my password in the terminal and nothing happened. So, I figured I was already logged in and just continued via your instructions. All went well I got to "Is Ubuntu 9.04" your correct distro/OS and version (y=yes*, n-no, q=quit)? I typed in y. Then I got ENTER ROOT/SUERUSER PASSWORD. I'm guessing that is my os password. So, I typed that in. It's not accepting that password and consequently, I cannot continue. Do you have any suggestions? What is a ROOT/SUPERUSER?

Thanks so much!

^^
I forgot to add that when I attempt to type in a password at ROOT/SUPERUSER I cannot type ANY characters in. It just sits there blinking.

Hi Frank,
Tried most of the suggested answers in Question 81275, but still the terminal in Ubuntu 9.10 cannot open any of the 4 hplip-3.10.2 files, (under any of those circumstances), that are on my desktop as shown:-

mikeh@mikeh-desktop:~$ cd Desktop
mikeh@mikeh-desktop:~/Desktop$ ls -l

mikeh@mikeh-desktop:~/Desktop$

Where do I go from here?

the printer should have been turned on when you installed the 9.10....it
would have installed itself and a p/c restart would have completed it....for
now go to default printer in preferences and highlight it and set as default
.... in 9.10 terminal commands are not used to install it ... 9.10 is file
system 4 and does it automatically ... frank
