HPLIP

The printer says "Checking device etc." and has been doing this for several hours.

The printer says, "Checking device, this process may take several minutes. Do not turn off this device, do not open or close any covers." This has been on the printer for several hours now. Thanks for your help.

This sounds like a hardware problem. The HP Linux Imaging and Printing project only provides driver support and assistance.
