Dell Mini 9 - scanner won't work

Asked by snowleopard4

I've got Dell Mini 9 with original Dell version of Ubuntu. Hooked up to (brand new) HP Deskjet F2280 all in one printer. The printer was recognised as soon as I connected it & works fine, but the scanner won't work - I get the message 'Failed to open device v4l:/dev/video0': Invalid argument' in Xsane.
Any help appreciated, but I don't know much about Linux & so need it in 'explaining it to your grandmother' (ie plain english, & step by step) terms.

It looks like sane isn't configured correctly

Run:

sudo gedit /etc/sane.d/dll.conf

add:

hpaio

to the bottom. Save, exit.

Run:

sudo apt-get install sane-utils

Disconnect and reconnect the printer and you should be good to go.

Hope this helps.

Hi Aaron,
Thanks for the easy to follow directions. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the same message: 'Failed to open device v4l:/dev/video0': Invalid argument' when I open Xsane. Have tried turning printer off & on/replugging/rebooting computer & still no joy.

Can anyone give me any further help with this, or point me in the right direction? Not being able to count on things working, & not being able to get solutions, is what puts me off continuing with Linux.

Run:

sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog

then try and scan and post the output in the syslog.

Thanks!

The problem is that the HPLIP that is installed (2.8.2) does not support the Deskjet F2200 series. This device requires HPLIP 2.8.6 or greater.

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/deskjet_aio/deskjet_f2200_series.html

Try installing the latest version of HPLIP and you'll have better success.

Hope this helps.
