PhotoSmart C3180 can scan but not print

Asked by Spiros

I installed hplip on my Sabayon to work with my Photosmart C3180 (which under Ubuntu works fine). Now I can scan, but I cannot print. When for example I try to print the test page, hplip says: "Device communication error (error code 5012)".

Output of hp-check -t:

This is probably a permissions problem.

Run groups and post the output.

Also it looks the usb permissions are set to 0664. You may need to change this to 0666.

You can edit the file /etc/udev/rules.d/55-hpmud.rules and change the 0664 to 0666. Then disconnect and reconnect your printer and you might have more luck.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your support of HPLIP--we appreciate it.

Aaron

My groups: disk lp wheel floppy cron audio cdrom dialout video games cdrw usb users haldaemon plugdev scanner entropy pulse-access pulse-rt pulse crontab vboxusers polkituser.
So: yes, I'm in usb group.

Then: when I attach my printer dmesg says: "usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 4 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x5611"
So I control the permissions of /dev/usblp0, which is a link to /dev/usb/lp0:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 13 ago 13:04 /dev/usblp0 -> usb/lp0
crw-rw---- 1 root lp 180, 0 13 ago 13:04 /dev/usb/lp0

I also am in group lp, so I have write permissions on /dev/usb/lp0.

Yes, it seems to be a permissions problem, but I don't understand which file is related to the problem.

Hi Spiros -

Sabayon isn't fully supported by HPLIP, but we should be able to resolve this issue.

The file which Aaron was having you modify is: /etc/udev/rules.d/55-hpmud.rules. Change the following line..

# Check for AiO products (0x03f0xx11).
SYSFS{idVendor}=="03f0", SYSFS{idProduct}=="??11", OWNER="lp", GROUP="lp", MODE="660"

.. to this in order to pick up the permissions change.

# Check for AiO products (0x03f0xx11).
SYSFS{idVendor}=="03f0", SYSFS{idProduct}=="??11", OWNER="lp", GROUP="lp", MODE="666"

You'll need to disconnect and reconnect your printer after making this change.
