no locking of paper sizes per tray

Asked by sgtaylor5

On Windows XP, using the PCL 6 drivers and printing to an HP Laserjet 2200, with duplex, 72 MB RAM and Tray 3 options installed and set, there is an option to lock each paper tray to a particular size of paper. The described problem occurs whether connected by USB 2.0 or 100tx Network.

In Linux using hplip 3.9.2, there is no such option.

Why this matters to me:
I'm trying to print to Tray 2 double-sided (short side) 40 copies each week. I can lock Tray 2 for Legal paper in Windows and everything prints fine and the job starts instantly.

In Linux I get an troubleshooting error that the printer paper size is "Letter", and the print job is "Legal". I get a "Recoverable Error" indication 100% of the time in Linux, and not at all in Windows. I cannot find any combination of printer driver settings that will allow me to print this job except one page at a time in Linux.

Ouch! I've tried reformatting my Linux install and re-installing many times to no avail. The first time I set up this printer with Linux, it printed this job beautifully, but when I printed with Windows, it hasn't printed this job (and this print job alone) correctly since.

All other print jobs print beautifully in Linux. I thought I knew computers, but this problem has me quite stumped.

Please run hp-check -t and post the output.

What application are you printing from?

Also for setting a specific paper size to a specific tray you can make more than one printer queue and set the parameters you require. For example you can create another queue, name is HP_Legal (or something) then in cups or hp-toolbox set the print settings. then create another one called HP_Letter, etc. then when you can to print legal you can select the legal queue and so forth.

Aaron,

Thanks for writing me back.

I'm printing from openoffice 3.1.0 writer; I will try the queue idea
next. hp-check -t output follows:

steve@portableOne ~ $ hp-check -t

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.2)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.1

Copyright (c) 2001-8 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it
under certain conditions. See COPYING file for more details.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before
compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper
dependencies
are installed to successfully compile
HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a
distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied
tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully
run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This
mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time
dependencies).

Aaron,

I don't know how. But I did find a way - just run 10 four page jobs, and
that prints 40 copies.
