hp-toolbox gui doesn't show

Asked by Timmy

After updating from hplip 2.8.x to 3.9.6b, I can't run hp-toolbox/device manager. I've tried running from the systray (select "device manager...") and from the command line, but neither work. From the cli, this is what I get:

...then nothing. I've uninstalling and re-installing with no results. Printing seems to work fine: I can print testpage. Thanks.

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the
proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP
supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time
dependencies).

Ok, so now I can't print at all!

I seems that hplip can't communicate with cups. I deleted my queues and tried to setup them up again in hopes that that would solve the problem, but now I can't even add a printer to the queue. I'm getting this message:

error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again.

I've tried restarting cups, but that didn't help.

Here's the output from "hp-setup -g":

Ok, I added my self to the "sys" group and now can add my printer to the queue. but I still can't print. When I try to print a testpage I get this:

error: Print command failed with exit code 256!

I noticed this when running "hp-check":

PSC_2200
--------
Type: Printer
Device URI: hp:/net/PSC_2200_Series?ip=192.168.1.143
PPD: /etc/cups/ppd/PSC_2200.ppd
PPD Description: HP PSC 2200 Series, hpcups 3.9.6b.4
Printer Filter "/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups" for printer "PSC_2200" not available: No such file or directory
Communication status: Good

The printer can't be found. I wonder if this is related.

Hi Timmy -

Sorry for the delay. Can you try removing HPLIP via yast, then installing the latest (3.9.8) HPLIP? Please follow the steps outlined in this article as well.

http://hplipopensource.com/node/328

The PSC2200 is an older unit, and unfortunately, it's reached it's end of support stage (http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/psc/psc_2200_series.html). That said, I can still help you troubleshoot this issue, but with limited capacity.

Thank you for supporting HPLIP.

Hi Linus,

HPLIP 3.9.8 is installed and the printer is setup in both HPLIP and CUPS (1.4rc1). The problem seems to be communication between HPLIP and CUPS.

When I try to print a testpage I get the following:

> hp-testpage

Using printer: PSC_2200

lpr: successful-ok
error: Print command failed with exit code 256!

Here's what it looks like from the cups error log:

If i try to print a testpage with cups, I get this:

Here's what the cups error log file looks like:

Oh FYI, for some reason cups was looking for "hpcups" in /usr/lib/cups/filter/ instead of /usr/lib64/cups/filter/ so I just added a link. But why is that?

Thanks.

Timmy -

It sounds like there's a version conflict. Did you completely remove the old (2.8.x) HPLIP before installing the new (3.9.8), or did you let the system upgrade it for you?

I'd suggest removing HPLIP completely, then reinstalling 3.9.8. That should resolve your issue.

Linus,

Also, I have the same issue as before:

It's using path "/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpcups" instead of "/usr/lib64/cups/filter/hpcups"

I think if we can solve this problem, we'll be going in the right direction.

Please try the following:

1. remove hplip using Yast2
2. completely remove hplip via the command line (see http://hplipopensource.com/node/188)
3. reinstall NOT using Yast (see http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html)

If this still persists, please enable cups debugging, and post the log generated when the print error occurs. Also, post your hp-check results after reinstall.

Thank you for your patience.

Timmy:

I have been able to reproduce this issue on an openSuSE 10.3 system and it was resolved by doing the following:

1. Remove all existing hplip software by following the directions at the following link: http://hplipopensource.com/node/188
2. Download newest release of hplip (3.9.8).
3. Start automatic installer as normal.
4. At the first dialog during the install process quit the automatic installer.
5. Change directories into the hplip directory that was just unpacked.
6. Run the command, "./install.py --qt4"

I have tried this a few different times, each one on a new system, and have had no problems getting the GUI active.

Please let me know if this doesn't work and I will dig a little deeper.

Hi Jason,

I will try your suggestion and post the results.

However, there is still another unresolved issue (please read above) that Linus has been helping me with. So let's leave this case upon until that is resolved as well. Or maybe we should open a new case?

Thanks,

Timmy:

I have been revisiting your issue as mentioned above and I believe I have narrowed it down to one variable, CUPS. You are apparently running version 1.4rc1 and this, from what I can tell, is what has caused the problem. I have had no problems with printing on my SuSE 10.3 system, even after wiping the system and reinstalling, as long as I follow the above instructions (posted by me) and use the provided version of cups (1.2.12). However, when I updated CUPS to 1.4rc1 all printing stopped. Unfortunately this issue is outside of my realm but I did spend a little time, for curiosity's sake, to troubleshoot it. I learned that even after rolling back to 1.3.9 and/or 1.2.12 I was still getting the "Restart Cups" message and was unable to correct this problem.

As I mentioned, I will be unable to assist you with this problem but hopefully it allows you to narrow the focus. Let me know if there is anything else you come across that directs the issue back to HPLIP.

Thanks,

Jason
