HPLIP installation under PCllinuxOS 2009

Asked by Peter Nancarrow

I am attempting to use HP printer management for a Deskjet 5940 printer in a PCLinuxOS 2009 operating system. Running the HP Printer Management Application consistently gives an error message window stating “No Installed HP Devices Found”. All dependencies called for by hp-test are fulfilled except for an apparently missing 'DBus', but my OS includes dbus (and dbus-X11, although not dbus-sharp). I have tried removing and reinstalling the printer under HPLIP, CUPS and Printerdrake, but the error persists. Any help would be welcome.

Please run hp-toolbox -g and post the output. It will be rather long. I'm not seeing any errors in the hp-check that would stop hp-toolbox from running so I'd like to look at the hp-toolbox log to see if we can get any hints.

Thanks!

Thanks for your response. This is the output from hp-toolbox -g; at the line

              hp-toolbox(UI)[6481]: debug: Removals (2):

the HP Toolbox window came up with its error message 'No HP devices found'

Do you want me to go through the printer install process from that GUI window? If so, I presume I need to uninstall the printer first.

Awaiting your further comments.

Did you configure the printer using hp-setup? Is it possible to install the latest HPLIP (3.9.6b) and try that?

Can you delete the printer queues and then run hp-setup to configure the printer again?

Thanks!

Thanks for your message as below.

I have tried the following sequence:

1) Remove printer using CUPS
2) Stop CUPS via system configuration
3) Restart CUPS (so no printer, no queue)
4) Use hp-setup to re-install printer

I then get to the stage where the PPD file is called for, and
select the file HP-Deskjet_5940-hpijs.ppd. When I click to accept
the selection, I then get an alarm box which tells me "Printer queue
setup failed", but when I close the box the HP Device Manager informs
me that the printer has been successfully installed on my system.
However, on re-opening HP Device Manager, it still fails to detect
the printer.

Any ideas? As a non systems man, I'm a little reluctant to use software
which isn't on the distro repositories.

Regards,

Peter N.

Lets try deleting the printer queue, then run hp-setup -g and post the entire output.

I'd like to see what hp-setup is doing and what the error is more specifically.

Thanks!

OK Aaron, here it is!

I (once again) deleted the printer and stopped/re-started CUPS to eliminate the queue. Then I ran hp-setup -g. Here is the Konsole output from the process.

You can test on a windows system to make sure the printer is working correctly?

You could also try installing HPLIP 3.9.6b. We do not test on PCLinuxOS so there may be some other issue going on with PCLinuxOS.

Aaron, thanks for your efforts.

The printer works OK under Linux without problems; what doesn't work is the HP Printer Management Application, so I can't get info about the ink levels - which is a bit of a pain.

I'll take the question up directly with the guys at PClinuxOS, but would be interested if you could give me any information on two points;

a) Did the hp-setup log show any key points which need investigation?

b) The 'native' list of pdd files in the selector in the Printer Management Application on my installation contains no entries for Deskjet machines, although HP Business Inkjets, HP Color Laserjets and HP Laserjets are all represented by dozens of entries. Do you know of a ppd from any of these lists which would work (more or less) with a Deskjet 5940?

Thanks again,

Peter N.

It depends on how PCLinux created and installed HPLIP. It could be that for:

foomatic-drv-install=yes
foomatic-ppd-install=no

may need to be a ppd install. Right now the ppd's are created using drv (or dynamically)--but it's possible that PCLinux needs a ppd install.

In the hp-setup it looks like it's not finding the ppd. So this goes back to the above. You could try doing a manual install of HPLIP 3.9.6b on your system to see if that might fix it.

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/manual/distros/pclinuxos.html

Hope this helps.
