Missing PPD for Ubuntu 8.04 instalation for officejet

Asked by Yellow

I have installed a Officejet J4680 wirelessly on my laptop computer running Ubuntu 9.04.

I set up the network using the front panel of the printer itself and then ran hp-setup in a terminal. It found the printer and loaded the PPD files flawlessly. Prints fine using wireless conection.

I came to set it up for my wife, she is using Ubuntu 8.04.3 however it wouldn't find the printer. I tried to set it up manually entering the ip address it found the printer, but then in the list of possible drivers there was no mention of J4680 and the default settings did not work neither did using another printer option such as J5700.

Is there anyway I can locate the drivers either on the internet or on my 9.04 box?

Do I need to upgrade HPLIPs?

1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode

Ubuntu 8.04 comes with HPLIP 2.8.2

Ubuntu 9.04 comes with HPLIP 3.9.2

The OfficeJet J4680 requires HPLIP 2.8.10 or greater.

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/officejet/officejet_j4680_series.html

This is why the OfficeJet J4680 is not supported on Ubuntu 8.04 because it doesn't come with the version of HPLIP that supports the device.

Please install the latest HPLIP for support.
