Filtering out spurious "printer removal" HAL events

When the usblp0 device gets removed, there is a HAL removal event, which can be trapped eg. in hal-cups-utils.
The problem is, how can we distinguish between the removal of the printer, and the unloading of the usblp driver, which both trigger a removal event on the hp:/usb/... URI ?

The HAL events are actually up stream from HPLIP. You may want to contact the HAL or ubuntu team for more information (or direction on who to best send this to..).
