how to install OCR

Asked by David Armitt

Ubuntu 9.04
HP Deskjet F2280

Failing to scan and save text files as .txt

Optical character button on viewer screen brings up 'save file' screen. On selecting "save" a message "Failed to execute OCR Command: gocr: No such file or directory" appears.

Saving as .pdf and .jpeg is satisfactory.

Nevertheless it appears it should be possible to save text for editing.

HP do not offer support e-mail for Linux and their help pages have not revealed the answer yet.

So, if anyone has experienced the same problem I'd like to know. If anyone has solved it I'd be most grateful to hear how.

Best wishes

The OCR should work with HPLIP--however HPLIP doesn't support OCR itself. Any OCR support is provided by third party applications.

For Ubuntu you could look at this page for some more information:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OCR

Hope this helps.

Haven't tried this yet myself - at least not in Ubuntu. I have Ubuntu 9.04, though, and have discovered since reading this that gocr isn't installed on Ubuntu 9.04. Try running 'sudo apt-get install gocr' from a terminal or obtaining 'gocr' from your own favorite update or package management tool and see if it solves the problem for you.
