Officejet j4540 not printing on Fedora 11

Asked by Achtung

I just purchased this printer recently, after checking to see whether or not it was linux compatible, I decided to go ahead an purchase it. When I brought it home and hooked it up, I installed the printer with HPLIP and it detected and installed it. CUPS thinks the printer is functioning normally, and is connected, and HPLIP thinks so too. I can start a print job, it will report that it is starting the job, and then that it has finished it, but nothing is actually printed. I've only had it print once, and that was when I tried to print a cartridge alignment page, and it only printed AFTER logging out and restarting. It hasn't printed again since.

SELinux reported a denial at first, so I disabled it, and it has been disabled since. Still, no dice.

Here's the output from hp-check -t:

[root@nukelol ~]# hp-check -t

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Is it possible to remove the HPLIP that is pre-installed and install the latest version of HPLIP from http://hplipopensource.com ?

Thanks.

I installed the latest version of HPLIP and that seemed to solve the issue. Everything now works flawlessly. :D

To solve the "error: Version: (Not available. CUPS may not be installed or not running.)" you may need to install the cups-devel RPM ( to install /usr/bin/cups-config ).
