HP Photosmart C7280 has stopped working

Since a week or so, my Photosmart C7280 has stopped working to print anything at all. I think this may have to do with several updates the last days to the hplip and related packages on my computer with Opensuse 11.1. The latest upgrade was actually today (and did not solve the problem) and concerned hplip-3.9.6b-15.pm.14@i586 and hplip-hpcups-3.9.6b-15.pm.14@i586.

When I print under the KDE system, the print window tells me that: "Photosmart unable to start filter foomatic-rip-hplip - No such file or directory"

When I do hpcheck -t, I get the following output, with a similar message about foomatic-rip-hplip, but there are a few more errors, which I don't understand.

Hi Charles -

I think the problem is when you upgraded to 3.9.6b, there was still some data leftover from your previous install. Judging by the log you provided (thank you, btw) it looks like the system was configured for a foomatic-ppd install as well as a cups-ppd install.

How did you update hplip? Did you run the online updater, or did you install HPLIP 3.9.6b as a separate software package?

It looks like some of the settings from a previous install of hplip are still lingering on the system. Can you try installing our software independently from the SuSE update tools?

Hi Linus,

thanks for your reply, but I haven't found the time yet to follow your suggestions.

To answer your questions: my updates are done via smart, and both hplip-3.9.6b-15.pm.14 and hplip-hpcups-3.9.6b-15.pm.14 are installed from packman for opensuse 11.1. Is there an incompatibility between hplip and cups-ppd? When the printer was working, I could address the printer via the HP Device Manager as well as via the CUPS local web site. But then I find the Linux printing a bit of a mystery. And thus I do not understand the impact of your remarks about foomatic-ppd and cups-ppd install. I can see that foomatic-filters-3.0.2-269.47.1 is installed as well.

If there is old data lingering around, where would that be? I checked the contents of the 2 hplip* packages and the files seem to be in their correct place. Could I simply deleted the packages and do a re-install?

Maybe too many questions, sorry.

You could try removing HPLIP and then re-install from our website (http://hplipopensource.com) and not installing the Suse 11.1 package. We do not test the Suse package and can't be sure of some other problem in the package.

Remove HPLIP via Yast, then run:

su -c "rm -rf /usr/share/hplip"

then re-install from our website.

Well, it's odd. Today I got again new update of hplip and hplip-hpcups via the update procedure, but to no avail. I checked http://hplipopensource.com and decided to do first only the last part: a new hp-setup. Which worked nicely, I typed in the ip address of the wireless (no usb) and now my printer is working again! But, although I can do a scan from the hp-device manager, xsane and scanimage -L does not find the scanner anymore, as it did before.

So 1 problem solved, 1 problem created. Maybe I should finally change to Windows NT:-(

Anyhow, many thanks for your efforts, but for the scanner I guess I have to look elsewhere.

Oh stupid me! Re-installed the C7280 scanner with Yast -> everything ok now!
