Asked by chris wellard

I use ubuntu. HP F2180 runs perfectly but I need to access all the usual stuff which would normally be available on screen if one had installed the ';Nikon View' disc.

Chris,

Sorry, I'm not totally clear what you are looking for. It does seem like you are looking for information on the Windows driver for your F2180. For Windows support please go to http://www.hp.com.

If you are using Linux, please run hp-check -t and post the output.

Thanks.

Dear Aaron,

Yes I'm using Linux with Unbutu but I can't find how to see the quantities of ink left in the cartridges. A note comes up to tell me the ink is low but I would like to have an estimate of how low. NOTE:- I know nothing about Unix other than my son installed it for me in preference to Windows. I am, relatively speaking, very satisfied with it. I just don't understand what the answers to most peoples question which are posted. A programing ignoramus!

If HPLIP is installed on the machine, you should see the HP logo in the system tray. Double click it and the info that you are looking for is on the second or third tab (Status or printer information)

Dear IWANT2BEELEAVE & AARON,

I've got HPLIP installed, well at least I think so, on the desk top is a sort of rectangular object (mauve) with what looks like a file card sticking out and the words HPLIP- 2.8.12 by the side and a white silhouette of a lock, but following your advice I can't find the HP logo or come to that, the 'system tray'. No mention of Status or printer information. I did tell you that I know nothing about programs or the lingua franca of computer terminology. I'm rather old and don't have enough future time to learn.
So if you don't reply to my tedious question don't worry I'll have to ask my son but he is in Philadelphia and I'm in London! (He hates printers!)

Dear Aaron,
I'm really getting worried that I am taking up such a lot of your and attention. So, I wouldn't think it amiss if you decided that you had had enough. OK?

Well, I did as you suggested and the result was a new black screen with pretty orange writing. But as far as I could see there was no way of copying it. I couldn't see select and the copy and past were greyed out.

That's where I am at the moment.

All I want is to be able to find the chart arrangement which is in my Microsoft Windows computer showing the approximate amount of ink remaining in the two cartridges as I don't want to change them before absolutely necessary. I keep the Microsoft for emergencies.

Thank you,

Chris

Chris,

If you want to check the ink levels you can run hp-toolbox.

Click Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal

Enter 'hp-toolbox', press enter. The toolbox should run and you should see a supplies tab that will give you the approximate ink levels.

Hope this helps.

Dear Aaron,

You are so kind.

Well I did as you suggested and this came up:-
error: PyQt not installed. GUI not available. Exciting
warning: Qt/PyQt installation failed.
error: hp-toolbox requires GUI support. Exciting

When it says 'exciting' does that mean that somewhere there is some mechanism which has already sprung into action to rectify the error, or do I have to do something?

Try running:

sudo apt-get install hplip-gui

and then running:

hp-toolbox

Hope this helps.

Dear Aaron,

Thank you. It worked. I'm delighted. It's wonderful to find that someone unknown to one is prepared to help and take so much trouble. It underlines the whole idea of 'open source' and the comradeship within the community. If only this were able to be applied to life generally. I once believed that we could create a society based upon such ideas but alas my old age has shown that the human race is overall, irredeemable. Perhaps 'open source' is a sign of optimism despite the apparent gloom of James Lovelock.

Thank you,

Chris
