finding wireless/network printers

Asked by nosmo2222

I have installed the latest HPLIP on my ubuntu 9.04 laptop. When I open the device discovery section of HPLIP to and try to scan for available printers I can only select USB option. There is a Network/Ethernet/Wireless option and a Parallel Port (LPT) option - however these choices are "greyed" out - I cannot click them. Is there a way to activate the ability for the HPLIP device discovery to look for wireless printers? I'm trying to install a wireless HP C4580 . . .

Thanks Aaron!, Below is the output. Note that I also have an HP1600 connected by USB that is currently not plugged in.

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.4b)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

It looks like HPLIP was installed with network set to off:

network-build=no

You'll want to uninstall HPLIP--and then install again. The network should be turned on my default..

To uninstall:

Hope this helps.
