scanimage: open of device (HPCM1312) failed: Error during device I/O

Asked by stuckey

When using Debian Lenny AMD64 printing with "lp" works but "scanimage" does not. Running "scanimage" returns:
scanimage: open of device hpaio:/usb/HP_Color_LaserJet_CM1312_MFP?serial=00CNB8872H1M failed: Error during device I/O

"scanimage -L" returns:
device `hpaio:/usb/HP_Color_LaserJet_CM1312_MFP?serial=00CNB8872H1M' is a Hewlett-Packard HP_Color_LaserJet_CM1312_MFP all-in-one

I have run "hp-setup" and have installed the plug-in.

The output of "hp-check" command is:

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.4b)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Copyright (c) 2001-9 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP
This software comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY.
This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the
proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP
supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time
dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Please run hp-check as user and post the output.

Also run:

su

tail -f /var/log/syslog

and then try to scan (as user) and post the output in the syslog.

Thanks!

Aaron

Maybe you are running into this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hplip/+bug/364653

The workaround pointed out in the bug just involves creating a symlink.

Best regards,

I think I have the correct links:

from " ls -l /usr/lib/ | grep libhpmud"

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 2009-06-09 18:56 libhpmud.so.0 -> libhpmud.so.0.0.4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 90240 2009-06-09 18:54 libhpmud.so.0.0.4

Wait, you may have been right.

After giving the command you suggested, the scanner now responds to "scanimage" or "scanimage > scan.png", however, after scanning for a second (I hear it scanning) I see "scanimage: sane_read: Operation was cancelled" in the terminal. It creates a scan.png file, but I'm not able to open it with gpicview or gimp; when I do I see an error that says "Failed to load image 'scan.png': Premature end-of-file encountered".

"ln -s /usr/lib/libhpmud.so.0 /usr/lib/libhpmud.so" links libhpmud.so to libhpmud.so.0, which is linked to liphpmud.so.0.0.4.

So I'm wondering if I can't just "ln -s /usr/lib/libhpmud.so.0.0.4 /lusr/lib/libhpmud.so" and bypass the simlink to "/usr/lib/libhpmud.so.0". Would that also work?

I think have this for "ls -l /usr/lib/ | grep libhpmud"
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 2009-06-12 18:08 libhpmud.so -> /usr/lib/libhpmud.so.0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 2009-06-12 00:13 libhpmud.so.0 -> libhpmud.so.0.0.4
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 90240 2009-06-12 00:10 libhpmud.so.0.0.4

I had the same problem as stuckey with a CM1312 MFP and the fix to which Philipp pointed worked for me.
