HP C4640 Not Detected Under Ubuntu 9.04

Asked by ewr2san

Trying to get a new HP C4640 to work under ubuntu 9.04. Hplip did not find it with the default hplip that ships currently with Jaunty.

https://h10057.www1.hp.com/ecomcat/hpcatalog/specs/provisioner/99/Q8411A.htm

Implies that Hplip supports this model, so I upgraded successfully to 3.9.4b. Still does not find the printer.

Output from hp-setup below:

userabc@mediacenter:/home/temp$ hp-setup

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.4b)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 9.0

Copyright (c) 2001-9 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP

output of hp-check below:

root@mediacenter:/proc# hp-check

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.4b)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to
determine if the proper dependencies are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already
built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile-
and run-time dependencies).

Saving output in log file: hp-check.log

Initializing. Please wait...

The Photosmart C4600 series printers are not yet supported by HPLIP. They will be support in a future upcoming release of HPLIP.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for your support of HPLIP--we appreciate it.

Any Idea how far away that version is.. Im trying to decide wether to keep
the C4600, or go exchange it for a *C4480*.

I can't promise you a specific ETA or date--however the "plan" is within the next 2 weeks. Assuming there aren't any other problems are delays, of course.

Good enough! let me know if you want any testing done. More than happy and
capable of testing.

I manually installed HPLIP-3.9.6.run today and it works like a charm. Printed a test page, color page, and a PDF.

The "install wizard" on the HPLIP page mistakenly claims that HPLIP 3.9.4 supports the C4640, but it does not.
