All-in-one Deskjet with Netgear PS121 print server

Asked by Paul Abrahams

I'm able to use my All-In-One Deskjet F2210 with my Netgear PS121 print server under Windows. However, hp-setup doesn't see it even though I'm able to ping it just fine. I'm running OpenSuSE 11.1 and also Kubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) with the KDE 3.5 remix; I have the problem on both systems. Just to clarify, the print server is connected on one side to my internal TCP/IP network and on the other side to the F2210 via a USB cable.

Any workarounds or fixes?

The HPLIP installer will not find the printer when it is connected by USB to a router or to a computer that is sharing it. Any instructions you may have seen on installing a network printer refer to those models which have built in wired and/or wireless adapters - in those cases the printer is directly connected to the network and hp-setup would find it. This is not a limitation of HPLIP - the HP Windows and Mac printer installers work the same way.

I suggest:

1) Start by connecting the Deskjet directly to your computer and complete the HP setup. Test printing and scanning to make sure it's working.

2) Optionally delete the printer in the SuSE/Kubuntu control panel/printer list to avoid possibly confusing it with the remote printer you're about to add.

3) Reconnect the printer to your router and try adding it from the control panel printer list.

Note that you will not be able to scan, transfer pictures, or use the HPLIP printer maintenance utilities over this connection. If you need these features over the network, you'd need an All in One with built-in networking.

Good luck
