Sharing a printer with HPLIP on a headless server

Asked by Victor Mendonça

I checked a couple of posts and it seems that HPLIP does not support printer sharing, is that correct?

I'm thinking about buying a HP Photosmart C4480 and install it on an Ubuntu server (no X). The need would be to share it over the network with other Linux and Windows machines for scanning and printing.

Thanks!

Vic.

HPLIP does not support sharing a printer over the network.

You can however share the printer using the usb and cups backend. However only printing will work. For more information you can do a search such as:

http://www.google.com/search?q=sharing+cups+printer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=com.ubuntu:en-US:unofficial&client=firefox-a

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I should also be able to share the scanner via sane with limited capability like I did with a canon scanner.
