Linux opensuse 11.0 HP c4480 printer all in one. printer / scanner wont configure

Asked by linuxinlennox

Hello,
Trying to configure my HP C4480 all in one. Using Open Suse 11.0. installed HPLIP and was able to print saved files but through the HPLIP device manager but cannot print directly. I cannot print pages from the web in any browser. The scanner will not configure at all.
Does anyone know about this problem?

Everything looks okay.

Run:

su -c "tail -f /var/log/syslog"

then try and scan and post the output in the syslog.

Thanks!

Aaron,

I am not sure what i must type into the Konsole. Should it be su [enter] -c [enter] tail -f /var/log/syslog [enter]?
I have tried every combination but nothing seems right. Please spell it out to me what to type. I am a bit out of my league here.
Thank you

It looks like the printer is in some error state:

media-empty-error

Is there paper in the printer? Normally this wouldn't stop the scan however it could be that there is an unfinished print job in the queue and the printer is reporting an error status which is stopping the scan.

The printer is very selective about what it prints. If it doesn't like the way the print job is accessed it wont print and the job will remain in the print queue as you mentioned. For example, if I print from the file or an Internet page directly it will sit in the queue processing or waiting forever. but if i select the file through the HPLIP Stausu service print manager, it will print instantly without problems. This means i cannot print Internet pages.
The scanner is a ghost, the device manager opens kooka but it will not open or detect an image.
The copier is scanning and printing to paper.
I once heard that turning on a printer after the computer is booted can mess with the configuration of the printer, could this be happening?

linuxinlennox (dborrack) said :

Oh, by the way, I did delete everything on the print queue before i attempted to scan again.
I also forgot to add that accessing Kooka through the desktop icon also opens Kooka with the same negative results ie. wont open or detect an image.

thank you,

David

usr/share/system-config-printer/troubleshoot/__init__.py

can help you for get the reason, my case out of paper, if take too long time, press CTRL + C one time on console, or two...

With the printer connected and not in any error state run:

hp-info -i

and post the output.

Thanks.

*here are results.I tested that the printer was not in error state by printing from the device manager (the only way possible to print at present). Printing from the web, or directly from a file is still not possible. Scanner still not working. Thanks

This could be a permissions problem.

Try adding your user to the lp and scanner groups and then try printing/scanning again.

Hope this helps.

Well, this bug still exist...

the actual HPLIP i'm using is 3.10.5
the problem are the same, the printer have only 1 button, who turn on and turn off the printer, so, if we don't want to turn off and then turn on the printer, web could have a button in HPLIP to change the status... from 1009 (the printer is out of paper) to 1000 (idle)...

can we change the status from 1009 to 1000 from terminal?

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/559331

There the people recommend an action, remove the line

"Adam Procter wrote on 2010-04-20: #2

This seems to work for me as a workaround:

* Open /etc/cups/printers.conf in a text editor.
* Look for a line that says "Reason media-empty-error". Delete it.
* Save printers.conf and restart cups (sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart)."

But that doesn't help us, because in our case the problem is in the Printer... that is not in our computers... that is just the state of the printer.

Can you help with this problem?
