Ran out of paper causes HPLIP to crash indefinately.

Asked by DERG

I can see this post -
https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/70935
has ran it's course without a solution. So, I'd like to re-open the issue with a new post but focus on what I'm sure is the root of the issue; the software itself.
A little background. We had the printer, a new HP Laserjet P1006, up & running with HPLIP & the Foomatic/foo2xqx driver installed. The only thing that wasn't working was doing a test print with HPLIP software. This would error & said a "needed plug-in" missing. And, using the recommended method of downloading from the HP site, would always say that it was a successful install but would continue with the same error, again wanting the "needed plug-in".
So, for about a week everything printed fine. Then we ran out of paper. Seems common enough, doesn't it? Just put more in & off you go, right? Wrong!
For several days of trading post in question 70935 above we got nowhere; & still haven't. The only solution that worked was to un-install HPLIP. Now it prints good as ever but without the software benefits of toner level, ect.

So, here's some new questions.
1) Will HPLIP ever be stable enough to be dependable?
2) Is the issue caused be Ubuntu 9.04; are Redhat, Fedora & other Linux OS more stable - less tampering, more predictable?
3) Can just portions of HPLIP be installed? For example, just toner-level?
I do appreciate the efforts here at Launchpad. Sometimes, there just isn't a simple solution.
Thanks!

HPLIP and foo2 should not both be in use to operate this printer. The p1006
requires a firmware download, and most likely both packages are trying to
download the firmware on the printer. Recommend that you choose one package
and remove the other.

With HPLIP and this printer, you will not be able to get toner levels, it is
unsupported on this printer. At best, you will get a "low toner" warning in
HPLIP and/or the CUPS interface.

We test extensively on Ubuntu, Fedora, etc. so you should be able to get a
stable setup on any of these top tier distros.

Thanks dwelch91,
I completely un-installed foo2 & reinstalled HPLIP 3.9.4b, used the hpijs driver & the results were the same. It is an endless cycle of "printer is busy" & code 5012 or 1018. HPLIP has a motion icon indication that it IS out of paper; even after the re-install. Un-installed HPLIP & it now prints fine.

HPLIP did indicate toner level with a percentage. Is a new printer & it show the level at 100% but we haven't used the printer enough to see if it actually worked but it seemed to. In the terminal "hp-level" also worked with a percentage.

Please explain where I'm wrong. My understanding is that HPLIP is a software package that, along with a printer driver, offers things like toner levels, paper size, print que - things like that. Foo2xqx is just a print driver - no other software.

I tried re-installing again & now it does print. HPLIP 3.9.4b is acting differently, however. For example, I cannot open the manager from the "HP" icon at top menu bar but can from Applications. Go figure!

dwelch91, you mentioned firmware. Is this something different that the "needed plug-in" as the plug-in installed successfully?
Thanks,
DERG

The firmware is included in the plugin.

The p1006 is not configured for status, so this will likely stay at 100%
indication until its low/empty, and then it will show 0%. (So, its not
really showing you a useful supplies level).

The level of features supported in HPLIP varies from printer to printer. The
p1006 has only limited support in HPLIP due to its restricted feature set
(for example, it doesn't report supplies levels to the software). This is
typical for low-cost printers.

Understanding what to expect is key. As to being relativity new to Linux, I don't know what to expect; only guess that some of these features would be standard. It's working & that's good.
Thanks.

Hi, I have the same problem with a LaserJet 1020 (not "plus").
Essentially once I have put paper back in the tray there is no way to tell the PC to retry.
I can understand that the printer does not clear its status on its own and on Windows you get a pop up window telling you to put paper in the tray that features a button to clear the error.
Do I correctly understand that the only way to correct the paper out error is to open / close the printer for it to assess its state and report all green to the PC?
Is this valid for all HP printers on any Linux?

Patrick,
Open & close the flap door 5 times to reset out of paper. Strange, but that's how it works.

OMG DERG! Thank you! That 5x door opening thing saved my butt. Really didn't feel like messing around with software. Rock!
