hplip-3.22.12 doesn't see python3-dbus giving critical error
Hi there, merry Xmass.
I have an old hp printer which i working fine with windows. deskjet 880C
Latest try installing hplip is using
hplip-3.23.12.run
exiting with error because missing dependency with python3-dbus which is actually installed. There are also other missing dependency for packages installed but these come with warning
I run Ubuntu LTS22.04. If it helps I have anaconda installed
I run out of options coming to the point I thought the printer was broken which is not because I just tried with windows 10 and as I said it is working
thanks a lot

If you are running Ubuntu, then you better use the adapted HPLIP packages (slightly older version) from the Ubuntu repositories instead of the hplip-*.run file (unless you need the newest version).
sudo apt unstall hplip hplip-gui

Hi Manfred, thanks for your prompt reply.
I tried from the repositories before and tried now one more time.
After sending a file to print I receive an error and running the diagnostic this is the output:

I also tried hp-check as superuser. I received this error:
error: 'libcups2' package is missing/
but the package is installed.
Further check: from hp-check I saw it requires CUPS 1.1 and I have installed the 2.4 (default one). This can be the issue but don't know how to check/continue
I also checked the packages "not" installed listed in the diagnosys file and also those packages are not installed
Do you have further suggestions how and what to check?
I was giving up thinking it was printer firmware corrupted until I saw printer works on Windows (using same cable too)
Thanks and merry Xmas

It seems that you have an unhealthy mix of different HPLIP versions installed.
There are versions 3.22.12, 3.23.12 and 3.22.10 mentioned above.
I suggest that you remove all of them and then re-install only one, preferably the one from the Ubuntu repositories, which is 3.21.12

I tried few option and possibly the uninstall process haven't removed all files and config.
Last time, before i intalled from repositories Ichecked and there was no hp-* cluster of commands so I thought there was no hplip installed.
Said that, after I purge the last installation how do i check if there are old files and configs and how do I remove residual files?
Cheers

Thanks again.
After double checkin no more installation where in the system I installed hplip from Synaptic.
1) first problem was the system couldn't see the models.dat file. I fixed copying instruction from: https:/
creating the link to the models file
Still not working
2) checked the conf files manually creating the /etc/hp/hplip.conf file with ONLY this content:
[hplip]
version=3.22.10
[dirs]
home=/usr/
following suggestion from same post.
If I now run on a shell: hp-setup, the process start but cant find the ppd file
At the same time, if I start hp-toolbox I read this error:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/
QApplication, ui_package = utils.import_
TypeError: cannot unpack non-iterable NoneType object
Things are getting more complicated than I expected :(
by all mean, I've seen there is also the hplip app on snap.
Wish a nice 2024
