HP DeskJet 4155e -- Debian 12 -- I/O error when connecting over WiFi?

Asked by violet clare

hi! i'm trying to establish a wifi connection between my laptop and my printer, but when i try to use HPLIP to do so using a temporary USB connection i get an I/O error.

i saw on google that other users have had this problem (see e.g. question #135694) but umm. basically: i am not sure what troubleshooting i can do, my problem seems to be more or less identical to the mentioned user's aside from printer model (i have a DeskJet 4155e).

i had an error 5012 when i connected the same printer via USB a few days ago which suggests (i think?) that the USB connection between the printer and my laptop is, in fact, functional and not damaged.

i am not a very experienced linux user and do not know many Tech Terms so i would appreciate things being explained rather simply if at all possible. thank you, and let me know if you need more information.
