HP 915 All in One not detected by HP device manager on ubuntu 9.04.

Asked by korso19

Hello, I have recently installed ubuntu 9.04. I have had no problems with my HP 915 for printing purposes but the scanner is not detected. I have tried installing HPLIP following the step by step guide online with no success. All I have is the HP device manager that does not detect any device attached to my PC. Its weird because when I try to print out a page, it prints it out just fine! Can someone please help me on this? I have seen on the HP website that my printer model is compatible with ubuntu, if not fully, atleast partially, I mean the scanner works. So what is the problem I am facing? Thanks in advance!

Hello Aaron,
This is what I get when I run hp-check -t

radhavictory@radhavictory-laptop:~$ hp-check -t

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.9.4b)
Dependency/Version Check Utility ver. 14.3

Copyright (c) 2001-9 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, LP

This is free software, and you are welcome to distribute it

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

From what I understand, the printer has been identified but not the scanner. How is that?

Your printer is not in the hp-toolbox because the printer is configured using the usb:// backend. The printer needs to be configured using the hp-setup utility. Run:

sudo hp-setup

Be sure that the printer is connect and not in an error state.

In your hp-check I see:

DISCOVERED USB DEVICES

No devices found.

This means that HPLIP is unable to communicate with your printer. Check that the printer is powered on, not in an error state, and is connected to the computer.

Hope this helps.

Hello Aaron,
I had already tried hp-setup with no success. When the setup window opened up and searched for devices, it never found the printer.
I tried it again after you said to anyways and got the same result.
When you say to check for an error state, how do I do that? If the printer is connected and is working for printing purposes then it shouldn't be in an error state right?
Could there be something wrong with how i installed hplip?
I also tried connecting the printer using another usb port on my PC (there are 4) with no luck. :(

If the printer works "fine" with the "default" printer program that comes with Ubuntu but not with the hplip, could there then be some way of simply telling the hplip-program where the printer is (without bothering of first trying to recognize it).
Perhaps by manually transferring some settings file/or part of it.

I think to check for an error state can be done on the printer itself. (Some small screen or blinking lamp or whatever.)

There is probably nothing wrong with the hplip installation but rather with the setup.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

Even though sane-find-scanner says scanner detected, HPLIP doesnt detect any devices (scanner or printer function).
And GIMP / XSane Imaging Scanning Program says no devices found.

How do I get scanner to work ?
