Printer does not work for scanning printing OK
Printer is ENVY Pro 6430e and driver is 3.22.10 originally I think it was 3.17.10.
Installed OK no errors flagged.
The scanner icon was installed by new driver. When clicked it disappears for about 10 seconds then comes back and says no devices found.
Printer purchased a week before Christmas
I have reinstalled a couple of times trying different options eg ui or i option.

Thanks for the response Brian P.
The OS is Ubuntu 20.04 64 bit and the printer is connected to a USB port.
I have been wondering if reinstalling the 3.17.10 version might be an option ?

Barry,
On 21.04 users are given ipp-usb and sane-airscan as a matter
of course. My suggestion is to install these two packages
from upstream at
https:/
Printing will be affected, but we can deal with that.
This is not an HPLIP solution.

Thanks Brian, I think I might have messed up somewhere.
ipp-usb is already installed.
I downloaded the sane-airscan .deb file OK and when run It produced
/usr/share/
gunzip produced usr/share/man/man5 Which seems to be the man pages.
So I think somewhere I did the wrong thing.
whereis does not locate any other files.
Sorry for the hassle.

Let's check it is functional. Give what you get for
lsusb -v | grep -A 3 bInterfaceClass.*7
systemctl status ipp-usb
The file for sane-airscan is probably in Downlods. Go there
and check with
ls -l
Now do
sudo dpkg -i sane-airscan_

I cannot get this printer scanner going in windows either.
Is there something I should do here to setup sane-airscan archive ?

Hello Brian,
Well I spoke too soon.
The scanner worked well on that day and the printer & computer were
switched off a couple of times and restarted and scanned more all OK.
Then the next morning it could not scan and reported a driver plugin was
missing.
I followed the suggestions and installed "a plugin" but it reported the
installation failed.
I was using the Xscan that is on my m/c to run the scanner OK.
The Ubuntu program website has the Xscan program avilable.
I will reinstall that later today and let you know if it works.
If not, I will take the opportunity to install Ubuntu 22.10, reinstall
the Ubuntu site Xscan and then let you know the result.
Thanks for your help.

For a manual installation of the plugin you can proceed as follows:
Download the file https:/
Then open a terminal window and execute the commands
cd Downloads
sh ./hplip-
(In case that you have a version of HPLIP installed that is different from 3.22.10, then you have to adapt the URL and the command accordingly.)

Hello Brian,
Well I removed Xsane and Installed Xsane from the Ubuntu
software site but with exactly the same result plugin did not install.
Had a look at the Xsane website and my printer/scanner is not in the
lists as an available software.
So how did we get it going for some hours two days ago ?
Any suggestions of where we go from here ?

So no result. I cannot see why it won't run
I had run it early this week but did not use ./
Looks like the needed paramaters may not be in the file anyway.
The mystery is why did it work for just one day ?????

You have to use that name in the "cd" command.

I do not know why the attempt to manually install the plugin has failed.
I suggest that you try again and carefully select the directory for downloading the file, such that you can then "cd" into that directory and start the installation.

Hello Manfred,
Some success this time. It seems to be very dependant on what options I choose.
This time I ignored the request to turn the printer off and on again.
I then got options on ui pages I had not seen previously.
I will document the options that I take and let you know.
When setting the scan options I select "Grey" from the Colour or Grey.
I was really looking for Black and White but that is not available.
However it is working I think ! Will be interesting to see if it restarts OK after a full computer/printer powerdown cycle.
Thanks again, will let you know what happens.

Brian & Manfred, the following is a follow up.
SCANNER PLUGIN LOG
Well got the scanner working well. But now I find the bloody printer does not work !!! It works on both scan & print with Windows.
Re run hplip-3.22.10.run with a few different options & none make any difference. Frankly this software is a shambles. I tried the earlier version but it just crashed.

What is the profile option about ?
I am scanning a white paper with black print. There is no option for black & white only Grey and slide which seemed to work OK

Hello Brian,
It seems to me that the software does not look to see if some parameters have been set
up for the other function and if so set for the current requested operation.
Seems such a fundamental requirement I cannot believe it has not been done.
As the jobs remain in the print queue it could be something is changed in the Linux
system and is not restored when the current operation concludes.
I will let you know if it works in the morning, I am off to bed now.

Yes many times. Both with preceding ./ and without. Some of the times the only way to get it it function either print or scan is to reinstall hplip.
Just now this morning it would not print although last night it did print.
It did however detect that the printer was out of paper !
Just reinstalled hplip. Still no print, will now try scan; Does not work says
"Driver Plug in Installation Required !"
What is the significance of the option for Profiles during the install run ?
I have tried answering y & n to that question, no obvious difference.
Is the source code available ? What language is it written in ?
At present will not print or scan.

Barry,
We hope you have carefully read the info in the wiki link I gave.

ipp-usb *cannot* be on the system.

Ahhh, thanks Brian, I missed it somewhere that ipp-usb cannot be on the system at the same time. What are the advantages of each driver system ?
I can easily remove ipp-usb but hplip probably generates more files and might be harder to do.
I will have a go at removing hplip first.

Brian JACKPOT !
I managed to get driverless set as the Location on the Settings/Printers page.
Just tried it for printing and scanning and both worked.
Are then advantages with HPLIP ?
This was so straightforward. I only loaded it because HP Support said to do so.
I had a driver on my Brother which I had downloaded from the Brother website.
They provide Linux drivers for their printers.
So thanks Brian much appreciated. Are you in West Australia ?

Oh Dear, not out of the woods yet.
Got a few pages printed then a couple of blank pages.
Looked at Settings/Printer and there were no printers.
Did the search and it had two with the same name. Managed to remove one and got it set for driverless ok but in the selection Printer details it wants PPD file loaded.
Where do I find that ?
Sorry to have to keep this going but it is very frustrating.

I have re installed ipp-usb but it still fails to print.
It puts on top of the screen Printing
then
puts on screen Printing completed
However the printer does not make that clicking noise when preparing to start printing.
Works under Windows 10 printing and scanning.
Is the setup for the printer driver location "driverless" uppercase D or d ?
It also asks for PPD file but I cannot find them.

"the install script was & still is in downloads."
In that case you either have to cd (change directory) into the downloads directory first, or change the command by adding the Downloads directory to the file name.
Either
cd Downloads
sudo dpkg -i sane-airscan_
or
sudo dpkg -i Downloads/
(or something similar to this).

Previously when I entered that cmd it responded archive not available.
This time it run but only seems to have installed the MAN pages.
There is no program sane-airscan installed.
I could not find it on Synaptic either.
The hplip having been installed several times seems to have filled my Downloads directory with an enormous amount of "rubbish".
It now seems that the hplip ENVY 6400 files do not work with ENVY 6430e scanner.
At present I close Ubuntu open windows scan and save to a memory stick, then reopen ubuntu.

I was preparing an answer to your post when it just disappeared,
I was not aware that the plugin installer was a separate program.

There is an /install directory with a number of script files.
Is that where it is ? What is its name ?
Hopefully that will solve all my problems.
