the 'hp-plugin' command fails due a bug with a wget network connectivity test

Asked by Brian Williams

Hello,

I am trying to use hp-plugin to install the plugin for my hp1018 printer.

It fails with network connectivity due to what appears to be a bug. I ran the command in debug mode which is attached at the bottom. It is quite a recent version of the software, but I suppose it might be fixed in a later version. However, as it was installed using apt-install into a Debian docker container, I have probably picked up the most recent version available.

I would be grateful for your help!

What is your aim?
Installing the plugin file version 3.21.2 can also be done the following way:

Download the hplip-3.21.2-plugin.run file from https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/plugins and start the installer by executing the commands (in a terminal window):

cd Download # or whatever directory you stored the file
sh ./hplip-3.21.2-plugin.run

Don't you think it would be nice if HP fixed the bug in hp-plugin?

If I download manually, how can I check that the correct plugin is installed correctly?

What about the file hp_laserjet_1018.plugin ? How does that get installed?

Currently I am at the stage of CUPS sending a test print to the printer and nothing happening.

Installing hp-plugin as written in the question title, or something else?
You did not tell us, which operating system you are running.

I'm running Debian. My aim is to get it working within a docker container, based on one available on Docker Hub, but working on a Raspberry Pi rather than AMD/x86

I cannot understand why HP have created a broken link within their HP-Plugin commend. The debug shows quite plainly that the file(s) being searched for are for a broken link it actually says "Remote file does not exist -- broken link!!!"

This is the repository I am using: https://github.com/olbat/dockerfiles/tree/master/cupsd

I simply used an ArmV8 version of Debian in the Dockerfile here:- https://github.com/olbat/dockerfiles/blob/master/cupsd/Dockerfile

Everything seems to work, except that when a test print is sent, nothing happens. That's why I wondered about the hp-plugin.

A forum posting on the same problem recommended downloading these 3 files:
hplip-3.21.2-plugin.run hplip-3.21.2-plugin.run.asc hp_laserjet_1018.plugin

and using the path method. I did that, but I could see no evidence of it using the 1018 plugin.

I'm also not convinced that the path method worked. I have appended the debug after this.

Thanks for you help!

As far as I know, HPLIP offers full functionality only on amd64 and i386 architecture.

I do not see any search action for the directory, where the *.so file is on a Raspberry PI (probably /usr/lib/aarch64-linux-gnu)

I know that Debian has created a hplip package also for other architectures, but as far as I know, that does not cover the plugins (for licensing purposes).

I am not sure whether the hp_laserjet_1018.plugin comes from hplip.
I find it on openprinting.org https://www.openprinting.org/download/printdriver/auxfiles/HP/plugins/

That's not correct. I refer you to https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/release_notes

Launchpad fixes:

1152219 - hplip driver plugin support for ARM architecture

If you have read the release notes, why didn't you see:

If the "hp-plugin" command does not work, use "sh hplip-3.19.8-plugin.run" to install the plugin.

Why do you keep changing the goal posts?

>> As far as I know, HPLIP offers full functionality only on amd64 and i386 architecture.

So I search to see if this is true.

When I find evidence that Arm is supported, instead of addressing the bugs, you want me to try the workaround.

The point is, that Arm is supported. All I want to know is why the blasted software doesn't seem to work.

MOST importantly, why won't HP fix their wget bug?

Question: Am I actually talking to an HP person?

In most parts of launchpad answers there is just support by users for other users.
I have no affiliation with HP, and as far as i can remember, I have not seen anybody answering questions, who declared himself to be an HP employee.

If you have identified a program error, then you should create a bug report. The question area is not the right spot for such issues.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Brian Williams for more information if necessary.
