m454dn compatible ppd file

Asked by Eric

Hello
Trying to find which PPD file is actually used for the HP Color LaserJet Pro M454dn
According to https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/news/hplip, it is supported. I don't see a file inside that remotely matches this model. Any ideas?

Some questions first :).

Which OS? USB or network connected?

Ubuntu-derivative, network (IP)
My apologies :)

Which derivative and (more important) what version of
Ubuntu is it based on?

Stratodesk based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS

This, plus the fact there is a network connection, determines my
response.

I interpret this as meaning you want to print and scan. The method
I will advocate is not based on HPLIP or a PPD, but it is modern and
future-proof.

Give

  avahi-browse -rt _ipp._tcp
  avahi-browse -rt _uscan._tcp
  driverless
  lpstat -t

Thanks for your response. We require a PPD file for any/all printers in this environment in order for the printer object to be created within the RDSH session launched from the endpoint. There are 874 PPD files included in that HPLIP download, and I'm just trying to figure out which one is supposed to be for the M454dn as none of the names match.

Sorry, I do not do HPLIP and PPDs. I also do not understand
"RDSH session launched from the endpoint". Perhaps, if you
gave the requested information we could get somewhere.

What information are you looking for exactly? I'm simply asking which file is meant for the specified printer.
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/gethplip
I'm not sure what you mean by "I do not do HPLIP and PPDs" as there are literally 837 different PPD files inside the download under the CUPS directory (hplip-3.22.6-2.run\hplip-3.22.6-2\.\ppd\)

Each file corresponds to a compatible printer
apollo-2100.ppd
apollo-2150.ppd
...
...
hp-smart_tank_wireless_450_series.ppd
hp-tango.ppd

I think I have this sorted. But I am not going to guess. Giving
the requested information could help.

I specified the four commands to execute in an earlier post.

Not able to execute those.

Cannot execute the commands?

You have a broken Ubuntu 20.04 LTS system.

I'm setting up the CUPS environment. The endpoints are locked down. No, there's nothing wrong with the system or the other ~1,500 printers being used successfully with PPDs. This is simply a new model to the environment and can't seem to find an actual PPD file for it.
Hoping someone else can chime in

Normal printing commands do not work on your system. That's
my definition of "broken". Remind me not to involve myself with
Stratodesk again.

The latest upstream HPLIP package has /data/models/models.dat.
Does models.dat contain information about a PDD that relates to
Color LaserJet Pro M454dn?

All normal printing commands work just fine. It's simply unnecessary to involve an endpoint when all CUPS needs is a valid file.
Thank you for the first helpful answer :)

"~1,500 printers being used successfully with PPDs. This is simply a new model to the environment and can't seem to find an actual PPD file for it."

The ppd file that should work for that device is hp-color_laserjet_pro_m453-4-ps.ppd.gz (in the hplip zip file in the hplip-3.22.6/prnt/ps directory: that printer seems to prefer postscript)

What brian_p meant is:
Printing with PPD file is an outdated technology. The future goes toward driverless printing, so there should be no need to fiddle around with ppd files any more.
