hp-plugin doesn't accept the root password

Asked by Mirat

Trying to install the plugin for my HP LaserJet p1102. I've tried both my user password and root password. None of them was accepted.

I am on Debian 11

Hplip version is 3.21.10

These are the last lines of 'hp-plugin' command output:

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed
to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper
dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

Try a manual plugin installation:

Download the plugin package (the *.run file) in the same version as the HPLIP installation on your system (ver. 3.21.10) from https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/plugins and install it with

sh ./hplip-3.21.10-plugin.run

If that does not work, then try temporarily switching form wayland to xorg, or set the QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland variable.

Thanks a lot, Manfred, it worked :)

Before, I've tried to specify a path to the downloaded plugin manually according to this video - https://youtu.be/iHvZvn9jf2E - but it didn't help too

I also tried to switch the shell prompt to root (sudo su -) and run 'hp-plugin' from there (so it wouldn't ask for the root password) but it also brilliantly failed.

But it didn't occur to me to run the script separately, by itself

Thank you!

Thanks Manfred Hampl, that solved my question.

I know it's solved, but I had the same problem. In my case, the problem was a confusion between the root user and the user with privileges, i.e. hplip asks for the root user password, not for your user password.
