HPLIP does NOT work with current release of Kubuntu

Asked by Randy E. Brinson

Kubuntu 21.10 (and by extension, other Ubuntu distros?) does not permit installation of HPLIP 3.21.8. My HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is able to limp along when printing, providing I don't need duplex. But without HPLIP, I cannot scan or fax. This appears to be because HPLIP 3.21.8 has Qt4 as a dependency, and the October release of Kubuntu no long supports Qt4. Attempts to install the older, outdated Qt4 from other sources were unsuccessful.

My question is . . . When might HPLIP work with the current Qt5 or Qt6? I know that 3.21.8 was just released in early SEP but I am hopeful that HPLIP will be made compatible with the current *buntu releases that support Qt5 and higher soon enough that I won't be forced to replace my HP printers with another vendor's.

P.S. Attempts to use hp-setup were also unsuccessful . . . (error: Channel write error).

There is a modified version of HPLIP in the Ubuntu repositories (version 3.21.6 for *ubuntu 21.10) that might help.

sudo apt install hplip-gui

Unfortunately hplip-gui (3.21.6) did not help. It seemed to install OK,
according to this:

Yet, when I ran *hp-help* I got this:

Now, hp-setup cannot find the hp 7740 -- despite unplugging and
reconnecting USB cable, powering down the 7740, and rebooting Linux
[image: image.png]

As I experienced before, only one of the 7740 printers worked at all, and
it would not print, duplex, or be recognized by scanning apps as a scanner.
{sigh}

Next I dual-booted into Linux Mint 20.1 (based on Ubuntu) in an attempt to
verify that my misery was driver-based -- not hardware. To my delight, when
I put the 7740 through its paces in Mint, everything -- including duplexing
& scanning -- worked great.

When I rebooted again, into Kubuntu 21.10, the three 7740 drivers in the
screenshot below were all working fine, including *duplexing* and my
preferred *scanning* app, VueScan, is working great -- including the 7740
scanner's duplex feeder.

So what happened here? The Linux Mint is on a different FDD from Kubuntu
for both the */* volume and the *~* volume. When in Mint, I did not touch
any System Settings, System Tray settings, or anything to do with HPLIP.
It makes my brain hurt when I try to come up with a rational explanation.
Hopefully something here makes more sense to you than it does to me.
Anyway, thanks for pointing me to 3.21.6 for *ubuntu 21.10 in the ubuntu
repos. Once again, life is good.

Best wishes,

Launchpad questions does not accept images. They are immediately discarded, please see yourself https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/699229

If you want to show an image, you have to upload it to an image hosting service on the web and post a link to it.
