Can't install hplip-3.21.6.run fully on HP 8035 Pro

Asked by theavenger

When I run the driver install I get an error that 'canberra-gtk-module' can't be installed. The GUI install does not detect the printer on the USB bus. When I use the interactive install I eventually get ordered to run "hp-setup' manually. I do that and it takes me right back to the GUI again and I get the same issue that the printer isn't on the USB bus. The crazy part is that the Ubuntu 20.04 launch bar does detect the printer when I plug in the USB cable.
I am certainly not a developer and I'm not a real pro with the terminal. This is all on a HP Officejet Pro 8035. The printer was working perfectly fine with the old driver, but I got a warning from HP that I needed a critical firmware update. After arguing a while with HP support they tell me the required firmware is embedded in the new driver.
Is it? If so, how do I get the driver install to detect the printer on the USB bus?

Here's the output from hp-check. It looks like the driver has been installed.

supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

I really knew I shouldn't have posted here. The hplip driver works fine. Colour, orientation, scan and print are perfect. The problem is that HP doesn't have any support staff that know how the guts of their machines work. I'm now awaiting a call from a real engineer who will hopefully tell me how to get the firmware.
