Can't scan from HPM1536 with hplip 3.21.4 installed

Asked by Fred P

Hello,

I'm trying to scan a document under Linux Mint 20.1 / HP M1536dnf printer/scanner.
When initiating the scan process (select 'scan mode in HP Device Manager) its scanning for devices (xsane 0.999) and message pops up "Driver plugin installation is required".
When I select "Next -> download from HP authorized server -> Next" nothing happens.
When I select "Select and install a local copy of plugin file (hplip-3.21.4.run) nothing happen either.
Can anyone provide any hints what I do wrong and how I can resolve the problem?

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi

Can you please download the plugin from https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/plugins
And then run "sh hplip-3.21.4-pugin.run" on terminal. Plugin should install as expected.

Let me know if the problem persists.

Hi Anam,
Thanks for your advise.
I did as suggested.
Installed the hplip until the end incl. reboot.
Unfortunately it' still not working. Behaviour is the same as before.
I am able to print a test page, but still no scanning.
I took screenshots from the dialog boxes I received while attempting to scan.
If needed I can upload the screens (where/how?).
Regards
Fred

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

It appears your plugin version and hplip version are incompatible or plugin is missing entirely

"Current contents of '/var/lib/hp/hplip.state' file:
Plugins are not installed. Could not access file: No such file or directory"

It may happen if plugin is not installed properly on the system.
can you share the name of plugin file that you're using for installation

Anam,
after digging a bit, I went back to your post from June 6th and executed the given command to install the plugin file.
I didn't' do that before (guess I mixed it up with the hplip-3.21.4.run file). Now the plugin file is installed and the scanning is working.
I'm now making my self familiar with the features of the scanning process, in particular to scan multiple pages into one pdf file.
A note on the side, even I installed the version 3.21.4 of hplip, SYNAPTIC still shows a version of 3.20.4 is installed on my system. Should I be concerned about that?
Thanks for your assistance.
