newly installed hp smart tank 500 not working

Asked by MISRAIM GURROLA

Date: 21.06.06

I have installed a HP Smart Tank 500 on Ubuntu 20.04.

First, I downloaded and installed HPLIP via shell command line (ver. 3.21.4), I selected the "automatic" option for installation and, picking all suggested defaults prompted, but after performing re-plug option for printer addition, the printer machine got stuck with a beep noise.
Later, prompt for GUI wizard was chosen and the printer was added anyways (but beeping never stopped, so I restarted both printer and laptop).

I can send jobs to printer but they actually do not print and they appear marked as "printing".
I can see printer with green mark in Printers, altough when checking device-properties I see "Status: INACTIVE"

Could you please point me out what could be the issue and how to fix it?

Notes:

Whe launching hp-toolbox, I click on "Diagnose HPLIP Driver"; I see following warnings:

----------------------------------------------------- INSTALLED CUPS PRINTER QUEUES -----------------------------------------------------
$ error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/usb/Smart_Tank_500_series?serial=CN1183S3DJ

Hello Misram,

I do not intend to attempt a solution to your issue using HPLIP.
Also, I do not know in advance whether my technique will work.

Remove ippusbxd from your system. Switch off the printer and
unplug it from USB.

Then, download ipp-usb from

  https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/pzz/xUbuntu_20.04/amd64/

and install it.

Re-power and re-plug and give what you get for

  lsusb -v | grep -A 3 bInterfaceClass.*7

There should be more output for

  lsusb -v | grep -A 3 bInterfaceClass.*7

Indeed,

  lsusb -v

should provide loads of lines.

Have you switched the printer on and connected it?
