9025 prints only one page

Asked by Geoff Kuenning

I am running OpenSuSE 15.2 with the latest version of CUPS available. Printing works fine on my old OfficeJet 8620. I have a new OfficeJet 9025e with the most recent firmware (April 2021), and the most recent HPLIP (3.21.2). On that printer, the same file that works on the 8620 will not print correctly on the 9025e. If I ask for simplex printing, only the first page prints (with a spurious thin black line at the bottom of the page). If I ask for duplex, it prints the first page, waits for the ink to dry, and then spits out the page without further printing.

I have tried various connection options, such as IPP and socket 9100. None of those things help; either I get the same results or nothing prints at all. It doesn't matter whether I print from tools like xpdf, spool the PDF directly, or spool a Windows PostScript (.prn) file.

It's also the case that printing is astoundingly slow...I thought I was buying a fast printer. But maybe that only happens on the first page...

Printing seems to work correctly from a MacBook, so it doesn't appear to be a flaw in the printer itself. The slowness doesn't happen on the Mac, either.

I am about ready to return the printer to the retailer, because I've wasted far too much time trying to debug this problem. It appears to relate to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1299951 which as far as I can tell has never been fixed even though it dates back to 2014.

Here's the output of hp-check, with irrelevant (and private) printers removed:

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

The bug still exists, but I found a workaround at this site: https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSDriverlessPrinting

I deleted the HP-installed printer quee using the CUPS interface and then used the above site's second lpadmin suggestion (the first, "everywhere", didn't work):

    lpadmin -p scroll -v ipp://scroll:631/ipp/print -E -m driverless:ipp://scroll:631/ipp/print

In this case "scroll" is in my /etc/hosts file with the IP of my printer, 192.168.0.127. If you don't have your printer in /etc/hosts, the following should work (replace "scroll" with a desired queue name and the IP with your printer's IP):

    lpadmin -p scroll -v ipp://192.168.0.127:631/ipp/print -E -m driverless:ipp://192.168.0.127:631/ipp/print

I then used the CUPS interface again to set printer defaults, and now it works as expected (and prints fast).

I'm not going to mark this as "problem solved" because (a) it shouldn't have been nearly as difficult; hplip should "just work", (b) this approach didn't set up a fax queue, and (c) it's apparently a 7-year-old bug; it's time to get it fixed!
