OfficeJet 6950 stuck on "finish set-up on-line"

Asked by Andrew Clayton

My Mum just got an OfficeJet 6950 (to replace her Photosmart 5520).

I advised her to get another HP (due to their general Linux support) and checked the support status of the 6950, all looked good.

Normally setting up a HP is a doddle. Not so this one it seems. I'm trying to help her remotely.

It's connected to a Fedora 32 x86_64 system with hplip 3.21.2 over USB.

usb 2-1.6: new high-speed USB device number 32 using ehci-pci
usb 2-1.6: New USB device found, idVendor=03f0, idProduct=0f54, bcdDevice= 1.00
usb 2-1.6: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
usb 2-1.6: Product: OfficeJet 6950
usb 2-1.6: Manufacturer: HP
usb 2-1.6: SerialNumber: TH0CL7N33Y
usblp 2-1.6:1.1: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 32 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x0F54

She went through the initial setup screen and did the printer alignment check thing so we know the printer does actually work.

I set it up via hplip and it shows up with lpq

$ lpq
OfficeJet_6950 is ready
no entries

It also shows up under cups @ localhost:631

You can send it a print job and it says printing, but nothing actually happens.

This is likely because the printer is stuck at the "finish set-up on-line" screen with no obvious way to get out of it.

Going to talks about windows, mac and smartphones, my mum has none of those. But we're using HPLIP anyway and the printer is said to be fully supported by it.

How should we proceed?

OK, so after she sent me a picture of the printer display, turns out she had failed to scroll down the window to find the "manual setup" option. Having gone through that, it's all working now!
